This surname derives from the French for high hill (mons alto) and was originally found mainly in the Shetland Islands. Many Shetlanders travelled to the gold fields of Australia and New Zealand bringing this name to these countries (and no doubt many other countries.)The cemetery of the settlement of Charleston, just south of Westport has many records of the name Mouat (and other Shetland names.)
