Withing various parts of Croatia, some families use unofficial sept name identifiers as a way to distinguish their family line. This surname variation is used locally within the region of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County and beyond in order to identfy the sept (a subdivision of a clan) for the Mudrovčić family.
A few instances have been shared over the last 100 years which indicate that the family used this when addressing various members of their family living abroad. A notable instance was mentioned via letter exchanges between the Mudrovčić family living in Durban, South Africa and extended relatives in Italy during the 1950s. Relatives in Novi Vinodolski still use this today, although it is not widely known by immigrant Mudrovčić families who have been living abroad (outisde of Croatia) for more than three generations.
In a historica account regarding various families from Novi Vinodolski, Croatia there is a specific instance which signifies the use of the sept.
In Auckland, a whole street was full of our Novi people. Besides Braca Žanić's brother, there were also Krsto Krišković and his father Petar, Bogoslav Sokolić, Petar Mrzljak-Klemento and Ivan Mudrovčić-Majer. (read full post here) (2009)
As previously mentioned, this sept name is not widely known amongst the predominantly English speaking descendants of the family. The remaining branch of the family residing in Novi Vinodolski still use this identifier today in an unofficial capacity.
