The surname Rabbie was adopted by Jacob Abraham (the Levite) in Amsterdam on February 5th, 1812. Surnames were made mandatory in the Netherlands by the occupation goverment of Napoleon Bonaparte. Prior to this date, members of the family used only patronymics, e.g. Jacob (son of Abraham).
Jacob Abraham Rabbie was born about 1745, and died 6 Jan 1814 in Amsterdam. He was blind. He and his wife Hannah (daughter of) Jacob Cohen Bromet adopted the Rabbie surname along with their three children Claartje, Rachel, and Hartog.
All Dutch Jews surnamed Rabbie are descended from Hartog (1778-1844), who was a buyer of butter from the Dutch dairy farmers.
