About the Sternstein surname

In 2020, I, Allen Sternstein appear to be the only male Sternstein living in the United Kingdom. The rest of the male Sternsteins appear to be based across the USA. My family travelled from Memel, now known as Kliepeda on the Baltic coast to Scotland in the 1870’s, though I’ve not found their immigration records yet. My great grandfather Yechiel Sternstein and my great great grandfather Moses Eliezer Sternstein the Rabbi of Memel for 50 years are documented. Information about Jechiel’s separation from his first wife Sarah Wohlgemuth is in a German press cutting found by a German researcher a few years ago in a press cutting. Jechiel later married Helene Broza (Brzoza) and they had three children Bernhard who died at or near birth, Hannah who regrettably suffered from severe mental incapacity from a young age and my grandfather Sigmund ((Simon Isaac) Sternstein.

The civil marriage of his father to Malka Gordon was found online in archives by another genealogy researcher. That’s as much as I know of their history, but I still want to travel over to Klaipeda to see if any other records exist. A death notice in the London Jewish Chronicle in 1901 placed by his son Yechiel Sternstein says that Rabbi Moses Eliezer Sternstein was a recognised and respected Talmud scholar whose council was sought and that he passed away in Werballen in Prussia, now known as Virbalis.
