Baron JOHANN WOLFGANG von GRUNNE was born in 1766c, Bayreuth, Germany. Died June 22, 1842 Farm Kleinfontein, Kliprivier, Distr. George, South Africal. He came to South Africa in 1790 and farmed in George, Western Cape. He married MARTHA MARIA BOSHOFF and in 1812 married MARIA MAGDALENA SMITH. They had 8 children. Today his descendants in South Africa are known as van Greune, van Greunen, or van Greuning. As a direct descendant (mothers side) of JW. I would love to know if WJ von GRuNNE (born 1766) was related :to the Belgium or Geman von GRUNNE family. There were 2 brothers: PHILIPP FERDINAND WILHELM von GRUNNE (born May 15, 1762) (German blood line) and died Jan.26,1854 and MATHIAS KARL THOMAS (born Feb. 20, 1769) died October 7, 1853, (Belgium blood line). Both were Austrian Generals. I am also curious to know why would a nobleman choose to come to South Africa of all places, in 1790.
