Pedro I of Brazil

Happy Independence Day, Brazil! On September 7, 1822, Pedro I, Prince of Brazil, declared Brazil’s independence, ending 322 years of Portugal’s colonial dominance over the country. Nicknamed “The Liberator,” Pedro I served as the first ruler of the Empire of Brazil. Today, his remains are interred in the Ipiranga Monument, which is located near the historic site where Pedro I proclaimed Brazil’s independence.
