Prince Rogers Nelson was born on June 7, 1958 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to John Lewis Nelson, a jazz musician, and Mattie Della Shaw. He was named after his father, who used the stage name Prince Rogers while performing with his jazz group, the Prince Rogers Trio. With music a big part of his life, it was not surprising that Prince would also become a gifted musician. He even claimed to play all 27 instruments on his debut album. Throughout his prolific career, Prince wrote hundreds of songs and sold over 100 million records worldwide.

Sadly, Prince passed away on April 21, 2016 at the age of 57. Reports show he died from a fentanyl overdose at his home in Chanhassen, Minnesota.

Known as a musical innovator and gifted performer, Prince will continue to be remembered as one of the most influential artists in music history.
