Sir John Montgomerie of Hessilhead and Corsecraigs inherited the estate from his father, Hugh Montgomerie of Bawgraw (Balgray). John was slain at the battle of Flodden in 1513 and the estate passed to his son Hugh, who died on 23 January 1556. Hugh's heir was his son John who was appointed one of the tutors to Hugh, third Earl of Eglintoun. John married Margaret Fraser of Knock and was succeed in 1558 by his son Hugh. This young Hugh was a member of the Convention Parliament of 1560, at which the Protestant Confession of Faith was established.

Bill, have you seen this site: http://www.montyhistnotes.com/MorePages/Hessilhead_BraidstaneIrishB...
It is a chart that shows how many of these Montgomerys were connected and may be of assistance with determining relationships back then.
It shows descendants of the following different branches Braidstane, Hessilhead, Eglinton, Lainshaw and Skelmorlie.
I believe Major John Montgomery (Maj. John Montgomery) was of the Eglinton branch and William Montgomery (William Montgomery ) was of the Lainshaw branch .
Patricia, here is the Montgomery DA Project website. It might be helpful for those who are looking for their DNA Haplogroup. Alexander (1705-67), is: I1https://www.familytreedna.com/public/Montgomery/default.aspx?sectio...

Patricia, type in "Montgomery DNA Project", in your search box. Once there, click on the #1 on the beginning of the page. Once you open the Project page, place your pointer on the Y-DNA Results blue box at the upper heading to the left, & then, bring down your pointer on the word "Colorized", &, click it. It should open up the list of names, &, the Haplogroups that they belong to.
Let me know, if you still can't open it.
