HaRav Ya'akov Yehuda Leib Falk (hereafter RYYLF --MP), head of the Beis Din of Dyhernfurth and judge in (member of the Beis Din of? --MP) Breslov.

RYYLF was a Rav and a Dayan Rosh Yeshiva. He was a (the? --MP) son-in-law of Rabbi Naumberg (sp? --MP). On the tombstone of RYYLF appears: "For an eternal remembrance and for the merit of the soul of the Rav, the Gaon, the great light, truly-righteous and -pious, the famous man who spread Torah among various young men for half a century, [abbr. unknown --MP], Moreinu haRav Rabbi Ya'akov Yehuda [nicknamed "Leib"], son of Moreinu haRav Yehoshua Falk, may the remembrance of this righteous man be a blessing, the Halachic decisor for the holy community of Breslov and previously the head of the Beis Din of the holy community of Dyhernfurth, passed away on Shabbos, the first day of Rosh Chodesh Tammuz and was buried the next day, Sunday, the second day of Rosh Chodesh, in the Jewish year 5598, may his soul be bound in the bindings of eternal life."

As famous as RYYLF was while alive, it is hard to find stuff written about him. What we're presenting here are what we've succeeded in finding, with God's assistance, for the good of our Jewish brethren in general and especially for the more than four thousand descendants of the Rav.

The confusion between the two families is due to a book also called Pnei Yehoshua, by Rabbi Joshua Heschel's son after Rabbi Heschel passed away. For some obscure reason people liked to mention their connection to Rabbi Heschel as being descendents of the Pnei Yehoshua - further making things complicated. Even more confusing is the fact that Rabbi Yaakov Falk the author of the more popular Pnei Yehushua (studied as an important textbook at the major Yehsivas) named his book AFTER his great-grandfather's book and in respect of him following the explosion in the town that killed 36 Jews.

And here I insert a question: Why are you moving changing and managing these people,
when you cannot read their words in the original Hebrew, and care not about their legacy.
Just because you have 1 in a thousand of a possible ancestry in this man or woman?
Wouldn't it be better if you participated as users and viewers and left it to people who do care?

For some obscure reason many Hassidic families preferred to call the Maginei Shlomo in their geneological lists as the Pnei Yehoshua - perhaps because he was the first Pnei Yehoshua - although the book was published after his death, and perhaps because his name was not Shlomo.
The book Maginei Shlomo - Solomon's Shields is called so because it is "protecting" Rashi, Rabbi Shlomo Yitzhaki.

There was a strong reason to tie yourself in with the Heschel family. He claimed to be a descendent of Rashi, and therefor a descendent of King David's dynasty. (For a moment, putting aside the legacy of queen Atalya and hoping she wasn't the mother of Joash, as may be inferred from the scriptures.)
And so people who were descendents of the Maginei Shlomo, Rabbi Joshua Heschel were descendents of King David.

Later on, when Rabbi Falk's book became all the more popular, people would say and write that they were from the Pnei Yehoshua, many times mistaking one with the other. And so, as discussed in Hebrew in one of the posts above, even in the Falk family itself, there were those who thought that they were NOT descendents Rabbi Jacob Joshua Falk, but rather of Rabbi Joshua Heschel.

One of these cases is an argument in the family of Rabbi Jacob Judah Leib Falk, the topic of this questions. And so they may never know.

In the article it elaborates on the missing mention of the Pnei Yehoshua in the the preface to the book Binyan Yehoshua - which itself may or may not be this person's authorship.

The preface mentions the Rokeach and the Maase Rokeach (as putting their names and initials and family into the book's title).

The writers of this article found that the Binyan Yehoshua's wife had listed on her gravestone that she was "from the Maginei Shlomo and Pnei Yehoshua", meaning that she was a descendent of Rabbi Heschel who wrote the book Mainei Shlomo and who's writings were summarized in the "1st" Pnei Yehoshua which was published after Rabbi Heschel's death.

The article concludes that this is probably the source of confusion and that neither him nor his wife were descendents of Rabbi Jacob Joshua Falk (The Pnei Yehoshua II)
