Hello Randy. I'd like to help, but I do not know what I might be useful for you with. Jirka

The progress is wonderful!

Bravo! Most of my currently-400+ merge issues involve either people I've never heard of or people who haven't responded to my merge requests. One can only do his best :).

All the best from Michael

Back up to about 250. Thanks everyone for pitching in.

Randy

Michael (or y'all really),
a recent change Geni made, makes it worth while for you (or anybody) to go through their OLD requests and CANCEL them.

Now when you come across a pending merge, or create it yourself, when you press the "Request Merge" button on ANY pending-merge, in addition to the managers of the profiles involved, it will now show you a list of ALL Collaborators you have in common with the managers of the profiles. You can choose to send THEM the merge request instead of the actual managers.

What this means in practice, is that the more collaborators you have, the more likely you are to find a common collaborator with some random manager. This greatly increases your ability to complete pending-merges. ONE way of gaining collaborators is to join the Collaboration Pool: http://www.geni.com/discussions/6000000008539319639

I have added over twenty collaborators through this pool. If each of them has an additional twenty collaborators not in the group, then that's four hundred NEW managers I can get my merge-issues resolved for!

Get the word out, because the bigger the pool the faster it grows (and the issues disappear). :-D

So coming back to those old requests (regardless of the Pool), if you cancel them, and them review them again via your list of Merge Issues, you might find that you have a collaborator that CAN complete them instead of the non-responsive person you initially asked.

Shmuel and others: how recent was this "recent change"? I have never seen this feature. When was it first seen or is there a reference to when it changed?

An answer to this would help me decide how far to go back in revisiting merge requests.

Alternatively, I guess I could just start a new merge request to the same person who has ignored me previously, and see what pops up?

Regards
David

It was announced in the forum for a month ago.

See "Merging Enhancements" http://forum.geni.com/topic.php?id=62421
I have a screen-shot there showing hot it works.

There is however so many errors in the http://www.geni.com/requests/sent list, so I recommend that you check and remove requests there regularly, also because you might have new collaborators that did not pop up as alternatives when you sent the request.

Other errors are:
* If a profile is merged by a third part and not as a result of your request the request is not automatically deleted.
* If the manager is removed as a Geni user the requests sent to him is not deleted.
* If the manager after sending the request has become a collaborator of you the request link still does not allow you to merge. You have to remove the request and enter the profile to get an option to merge it.
This is also the case if someone else have become the manager of the profile.

How is everyone doing with the new Merge Center, http://www.geni.com/search/tree_matches?ref=ph ? I still have a bunch listed where I can't do anything to complete the merge. I have 76 merges left.

It is more friendly but seems there are still bugs there since it presents wrong idications and merges appear and disappear without logical reason.

Randy,
those aren't the only changes! If these remaining merge-issues are for profiles that are public (or should be), then the new Curator team can get those done.
