I have some information about Sen. (Maj.) Pierce Butler, a signer of the Constitution. He is the son Sir Richard Butler, the 5th Baronet of Cloughgrenan in Ireland, supposedly one of those elusive genetic cousins I am trying to link to. He once stated that he was related to the Fighting Butlers of the Revolutionary War from PA (more genetic cousins of mine).
Now they are an interesting project for the future!

Senator Pierce Butler had been a British officer in Boston at the time of the Boston massacre. He resigned his commission, became a plantation owner in South Carolina, fought with the Americans, became a Senator and signed the Constitution. I will send references. Mary

Great project!

You've been added to it Brendan. Better find that Butler profile for Mary:)

Brendan, In my quest to find my family's link to this line of Butlers (DNA says we are related), I have downloaded about everything I can find about the Butlers of Ireland. I have over 1,000 of them on my Family Treemaker software, and I belong to The Butler Society in Ireland. If you need info, I probably have it. I cannot find many of them on Geni, though. The main lines are the Earl of Ormonde, and the Baron Dunboyne, and minor branches include the Baronet Cloughgrenan, and nobles of Carrick, Caher, Tullophelim, Ballintemple, and others. They are related to the Boleyns and other prominent families. Mary

Brendan, I found a profile for James Butler, the 9th Earl of Ormonde. He is the
5th great-grandfather of my :) Maj. Pierce Butler, I can't find him on Geni. I will send you the Family Group sheets from Pierce to the 9th Earl. WIll you be able to add them to the tree? Thanks. Mary

PS I'm excited to finally find a place for my Butler research. I'm not related to the Mayflower, but my grandkids are, and that's why I've been concentrating to that project.

I added all of the profiles that Anita referenced to the project except for Jacob Broom, Signer of the US Constitution He doesn't appear to be in the big tree, so wasn't sure if he should be added. I completed all of the merges for the project too. Trees need to be joined, but I have to get work done today :)

Mary, I'm connected as well
James Butler, 9th Earl of Ormond is your 7th cousin 13 times removed.

Do you want to start a project for the Butler's?

Brendan, I would love to start a project for the Butlers. They along with the FitzGeralds and a few others, were the dominant families of Ireland for 600 years. I know I have a more direct link through my great-grandfather James Butler of Clonmel, born in 1832, but I haven't found anything except the name of his father John Butler. Still looking. Going to Ireland in the spring.

Brendan, If you were asking me to personally start a project for the Butlers, I have no idea how to do that. I would be happy to provide as much documentation as you or someone else can add. Mary

Count me in that Butler family: James Butler, 9th Earl of Ormond is your 6th cousin 14 times removed.

Working on them now, thanks Anita.

A favor. I think it would be nice to geni mail the managers of these profiles and invite them to collaborate in the project. Is that something you could help honcho?

Anita - done.

11/2/2010 at 11:22 AM

More to add:

Nathaniel Gorham, Signer of the US Constitution, 14th President of the Continental Congress

The Honorable Rufus King, Signer of the U.S. Constitution

William S Johnson, Signer of the US Constitution

David Brearley...no parent's names found, no marriage info found, no my initial search...this one may take some digging!

Gov. William Paterson I found his name spelled Patterson as well in other references.

Thomas Mifflin, Signer of the US Constitution, 11th President of the Continental Congress

Senator Gouverneur Morris, I

This is annoying... Alexander's birth date is in question, either 1755 or 57, but his year of death is not, definitely 1804. The most complete profile has the wrong death year...the profiles with the correct death year are no where near as complete. Your choice which you want to use as a MP, we can then merge the others in while watching the death date. http://www.geni.com/search?search_advanced=open&search_extended...
