Welkom nuwelinge!

As daar n "like" knoppie hier op Geni was het ek dit nou gedruk!

Kom ons prioritiseer die leeswerk/projekte vir die nuwelinge sodat hulle gouer die regte dinge doen.

lol.. nee man Willem, ek weet ons is almal angstig om dinge vinniger aan te help, maar dit sal vir my so bietjie te veel soos skoolgaan begin voel. Ek het daarvan gehou toe ek dinge so stukkie-stukkie ontdek het en wil darem vir andere dieselfde aha oomblikke op hulle eie tyd toelaat. Ek weet dis 'rich' komende van my wat op die oomblik so hard werk en dinge so bietjie dryf... As ons mense hier voorstel het ons darem 'n goeie kans dat hulle van Afrikaners af na SV/PROG toe sal oorwandel *Wink wink*

Wil dan ook sommer afskop en vir Daniel Steenkamp wat ek so pas ontmoet het Welkom heet!

Ek dink ons moet iets soortgelyks op al die SA projekte doen. Wat dink julle? Dalk met Engelse vertalings in daardie wat nie bedoel is om net Afrikaans te wees?

Sharon, ek sou voorstel ons hou dit eenvoudig en maak vir Engelse newbies EEN site soortgelyk aan Afrikaners is plesierig en cross link net al ons sites via related projects. Miskien dan ook tyd om een "South African Geni" projek te gebruik en al die sub sites summarise en te timeline soos ons al voorheen oorweeg het. Sal jy die engelse site vir ons lei? .

Ek dink dit is 'n baie goeie idee om een over-arching (Afrikaans woord?) SA Geni projek te skep en sit al ons sub SA projekte soos skakels (links?) daarop (Die timeline ding is n goeie idee). Ek sou bly wees om die Engelse half van dit te doen. Maar ek sien nie die noodsaaklikheid vir 'n aparte English site?

And while you are about it, it would be a good idea to explain or post a link to a site that explains SV/PROG. I don't think it is very common even for us South Africans and I only came across it here on Geni and it certainly wasn't mentioned in the Introduction to Genealogy course I did last year.

That’s true Brendan – SV /PROG is our own description – and we need to explain that it means Stamvader / Progenitor on the initial page that South Africans are welcomed on. And we need also to say that putting the SV first is a way of telling the world how proud we are of the unique languages spoken in our country.

Guys, I think we need to quickly make very sure that, while celebrating the unique and exceptionally beautiful contribution that the Afrikaans language brings to South African culture, we recognise that Geni depends on collaboration at the most basic programming level. Many, many SA English speakers in this country have a family lineage that goes all the way back to the original SV/PROG profiles too, including the Dutch and the Huguenots – and if we apply a mentality to Geni that attempts to exclude them through deliberating appearing to create separate language enclaves, we risk a lot more than just giving offence.

Give me a moment to translate this into my pathetic Afrikaans. Thank heavens I don’t have to include Zulu at the moment ;->

Dis waar Brendan - SV / PROG is ons eie beskrywing - en dit is nodig om te verduidelik dat dit beteken Stamvader / Progenitor op die aanvanklike bladsy waarop Suid-Afrikaners is verwelkom. Ons moet ook sê dat die rede SV is eerste, is om die wereld te vertel hoe trots is ons van die unieke tale wat in ons land is.

Ouens, ek dink ons moet vinnig baie seker maak dat, terwyl die celebration (korrek Afrikaans woord?) van die unieke en mooi bydrae wat die Afrikaanse taal aan Suid-Afrikaanse kultuur bring, ons erken dat Geni van samewerking op die mees basiese programmeringsvaardighede vlak afhang. Baie, baie SA Engelssprekendes in hierdie land het 'n familie spoor wat al die pad terug na die oorspronklike SV / PROG profiele gaan (tegaan?), insluitend die Nederlandse en die FranssprekendeHugenote - en as ons dien 'n mentaliteit te Geni wat poog om hulle uit te sluit deur beraadslaging verskyn aparte taal enklawes te skep, loop ons die risiko van baie meer as net misdryf gee.

Verskoon aseblief my minder as vlot Afrikaans, dankie tog dit is nie 'n Zulu vertaling nie.

Ag hel, julle maak my 'Welkom nuwelinge' discussion inmekaar tuimel en ek sal maar 'n nuwe een moet begin..;-)

So maybe there is a point and the "Welcome " thread at least may be more appropriately linked on the main SV/PROG or a newly envisaged South African - 'main site' and we should welcome all South Africans there.. I need to think about this a bit. In any case we will need to be slightly careful about where we use what or peoples noses will find a way to be out of joint.

Brendan, I will rework my reply here and work it into the intro in SV/PROG, but it was selected as a solution to a unique problem - how to set a unique search string in Geni so we can use search and identify progenitors and how to display them in a meaningful way in tree view so that they are clearly visible when browsing the tree. Once we started using it, it just caught and well, there's no turning back.

Using a1 a2 a3 really didn't work. Try it and compare to SV/PROG..

Previously many people used SV or Stamvader and SV/PROG was a good way to meet the requirement and be a little bit more inclusive of English speaking South-Africans. That was the main idea behind adding PROG.

Probably from next year they will start taking it up in the formal genealogy curriculum , but only in advanced courses… I have it on good authority that by 2025 it may even be a global standard ;-)

Afrikaners is plesierig was in NO way created to be exclusive for English speaking South-Africans and every South-African are hereby officially invited to participate in the language they feel most comfortable with...
