It's not one. It's several.

Started removing and then though better of it but guess what won't let re add anything. So toooo bad ! Even tho I was the only manager and i should be able to re add if I wish. Like the other person who couldn't add after so many gen. see it is true,

Judith

It's not a game, it's just the way the computers work. I would really like to help you, but I find it really difficult to search through 55 million profiles. If you can gives us some parameters, like the date of birth along with the name, then maybe I can help you figure it out.

PS I am being careful not to remove any join ownership. Just mine for the time being. Except as I said I can not put them back in.

Judith

Please don't remove my ancestors!

There's a lot of data I didn't add because my collaborators did, including you. Why would you want to take that away from me? I work just like you do. :(

Unknown Profile you don't have to tag a lot of them at once, just as you find problems then tag them one or two at a time. I am sure a lot of them are connected so we can go from one to another
There is no point to removing any profiles

Unknown Profile - re: "guess what won't let re add anything" - Can you undelete them? To see list of ones you deleted, with option to undelete: http://www.geni.com/list/deleted
Please let me know if that still works, or not.

Judy...Please don't delete anything....I need you.

Judy - as others said - Please do not Delete Your Profiles.

I (a Pro user) am also Not Happy "So Far" - with GENI's Latest Changes. However - for the past 4 years - 100's of GENI users Copied names from my personal web site (50,000+ names). I finally joined this April - and although initally I was shocked & upset as to how many were Copied - later I was Glad I did not have to copy the 1000's & was able to Connect (Merge) to the Trees.

I can't Imagine - if now Many of the Profile Managers began Deleting the Profiles - what mess that would Create for Me and Others??

Judith, please don't delete! Your profiles are a part of the fabric of the history of every profile that you merged with. You are so intricately a part of us all. Take a break if you need to, but then come back. You are needed, just as Fay said.

When you people decided to go back to the old ways or somewhere near the old ways and allow us non pros to still work freely with our own profiles . I will not add any thing else and am removing as much as system will allow. That could be right down to only me left. When back to a fair system I'll re enter. I am trying very hard not to mess up anyone else, which is more than I can say about a good number of Geni people. Not everyone but you know who you are and yes I know you don't care. You probably already have copied and printed all our info in anticipation of as defection!I put in between 11 and 15 gen. all by my self in this country and that's not including more than that in my European end of family.

Judith that's really a shame. I dont think you have anything against me, but by deleting, you make it harder for me to research. I'm not geni, I'm just a person, and there arecmany others like me you can help.

I hope you reconsider.

Don't leave !!
Until Black Friday Geni had a position in the genealogy industry as a niche supplier. A very coveted position.
With these new changes the Geni management wanted to adapt to the genealogy industry we were told. And has now become a grey pattern on the still growing wall.
I'm quite sure the Geni management don't want Geni to be a student case in Economy and Marketing to show what NOT to do.
I'm not a specialist in Marketing - but I have read Michael Porter.

Judith.....I do NOT have any backup...I don't know HOW to pull ANY data from this site...or EXPORT, as they say.

I have nothing against you Erica and I only got rid of my personel part of tree. Have not touched anything Historical and have left a good chunk of tree mostly because others are involved plus it won't let me delete nor add so none this really effects anyone but me.
Fay no one expect you to be able to pull anything from site. You don't know how to do that like I don't know how to URL no matter how hard I try/ But others should know how to do everything. At least that's the way they talk like they know how to do everything . Maybe they know how to turn water into wine , too!
Like I said what I have deleted only effect me and no one but me was interested in researching this part of my family. Until Geni is fixed to a more cooperative point I can neither delete some of my own family even tho I am the only manager nor can I put the ones that were deleted back in. but that's how the powers to be want it. Don't blames me for this whole debauchery. Blame the whatever you wish to call them in Geni for this mess.

Henry I have been removed as manager in several key profiles plus my personel ones which mean a lot to me have been messed with.

Lois, thank you I forgot about that list since everythings changed around here I can't find a lot things like my list of all profiles non Hist and Hist. plus the delete list. Everything is missing,

I just tried un delete a bunch of them. Didn't work. Another one of Geni's little tricks I guess!

Ot it's just slow!

@Judi / Judith Elaine McKee
If it is true what you wrote of Geni's intentions visavis the non PRO population not allowing them to merge profiles and other important tasks,
then I am an ex member.
There is only so much pushing one can take.

Cookson is back in. Some wasn't out . The ones I am allowed to add my self I re entered , however when I get back to John Cookson and Rachel Proctor I am not allowed to enter anyone else iff I have tem. It just pops up either move or resolve dups and there aren't any dups . This why I started cutting people out. Fix this problem or don't re add anyone else and the undete screen doesn't work. Oh, well, what can I say. So if there are no dups to be resolved and it's all me I should be allowed to add or subtracted any time I want and I don't see what value they are to anyone that's not immediately connected.

Daniel Levy , that's exactly what appears to be the problen and if they keep it up they will lose not just non pros but a whole lot of info that these people have that might be worth something. What a shame.

There ya go do not have permission to add to my own profiles. James Taylor born 1646 . can not re add his father . remember I am the one who put him in. I am the only one who knew or cared who he was. I was sole manager yet here's the problem. Bull , I am needed Bull UI am any help any of you or most you if I can't even work on my own tree.

Hi Judith

Thank you for giving me a date, that helped me a lot.

Here's your James Taylor

Mr. Treasurer James Taylor

I show that there are 4 matches in the database. May I have your permission to merge them together? Then I can merge the rest of their families and maybe we'll pick up some details that fill out the story a little more.

Judith write above, that she has been removed as a manager on profiles which meant a lot to her.
I think that's a problem in here.
We all ought to be aware of who has become the first manager after a merge. The other day I became the primary manager after merges of some profiles which was in a branch on my tree. I removed myself as a manager and left the job for the user to whose tree they belonged, as I know by myself that I would be sorry myself if I loose a close profile.
We can all help to avoid that.

It is impossible to be REMOVED as a manager, so she must be looking at the wrong profiles.

If you are talking about being the PRIMARY manager or not we have the following automatic rules during a merge in this order:

1) A Master Pprofile always continue to be the main profile
2) The profile with most managers (i.e. a profile which is a result of collaboration and being "old") continues to be the main profile.
3) The most complete profile, - i.e the one who have done the best job on a profile will become the primary manager after a merge.

As you have seen from comments in other discussions some curators might tweak on who becomes the primary manager of a merged profile if the current primary manager is inactive and/or the second profile shows up that it is a so high quality profile that the manager deserves to be the manager of the merged profile, but such takes time and is not recommended either.

Practically there is no difference between being the primary manager or not, - the only difference is who to get eventually contact profile manager messages and who is listed in profile lists where Geni only list one manager.

In the long run Geni works on a model de-emphasizing the profile manager listing on public profiles.

Since most childish quarrels in Geni goes on being the primary manager (childish because you as a co-manager have the same rights as before, so it can only be because you like to see your name listed first) I really look forward to such a change. We does also have the situation where a huge amount of profiles are managed by people which just have inherited the profiles or actively done profile hunting on unmanaged profiles, and with no knowledge of the line to be able to maintain it..

I would prefer that people spend more time on maintaining the profiles, and hopefully the manager list, if any names should be mentioned, will be replaced by a list of those who are doing a good job on contributing to a profile independent if they are the manager or not, where for example adding source references, making a good looking About Me and so on gives extra points, and an option for other users to give a thumbs up on a revision highlighting the person who made it.

A quick question to your information, Brox.

IF the info about managers of a public profile is going to be removed will that mean, that free users will lose the rights to edit their public profiles?

A serious question.

Bjørn P. Brox - thank you for Pointing out the problem - of having Primary Managers.

I too - look forward to the day - when GENI changes to List of Contributers, etc. - to Avoid the Current "Ownership" Problems - Reducing Grown-up people to behave like Children.

I also look Forward - for GENI Applying a "99 year rule" - for People who Died - Making their Profiles "Automatically Public" - No Excemptions & No Personal User Preferences !!!

Private User, I said de-emphasized, not removed.

This simply means that the managers will not be so highlighted on the profile frontpage as today.

It will however continue as today: When viewing a profile there will be a notice at the top that you are a manager of the profile.

Peter, - the main problem with what we call zombies today is that there is no dates attached to the profiles, so a system based on dates will not work.

There IS a test on dates and if a profile is marked as living and the birth date indicates that the person is older than 120? years you will get a notification about that and those profiles will also be marked with a question-mark in the tree-view.

Secondly, you cannot trust the dates. We have areas where people have entered just two digits as year but where you look at the level around you would understand that the first digits should not be 00.

The only things that works today is the method the anti-zombie script are using to determine if an area can be classified as historical is by counting descendant generations in the area.

Private User, a simpler answer to your question about none-Pro users access to their own managed profiles is: You either have edit access to the profile or not.
