Biography

Abigail Wheeler was the daughter of James Wheeler and Grizzell (Squire) Wheeler. Her parentage is established by a bequest in James Wheeler's 1741 will to his daughter Abigail, wife of John West.[1] Her date and place of birth are uncertain. Since she is mentioned first among the daughters in her father's will, she was probably the oldest daughter. Based (1) on the existence of a four-year gap between the births of her brother William on April 3, 1691 and her next younger sister Mary on March 18, 1694/5[2] and (2) the fact that she had a child in 1732 (which suggests she was probably born after 1690), she was probably born about 1693. Since her older brother William was born in Rehoboth while her younger sister Mary was born in Swansea,[2] Abigail was probably born in one of those towns.

Ebenezer Martin and Abigail were baptized by Eld. Ephraim Wheaton at the Baptist Church in Swansea on 17 April 1718.[3]
