About Ada Lancaster Carrington
In the 1861 census, Ada Lancaster Shaw was the ten-year-old daughter of Bentley Shaw a very active gentleman, a brewer & wine merchant employing sixty-two men. He was also a Justice of the Peace for West Yorkshire & a captain in the 6th West Riding Volunteer Rifles. Ada Lancaster Shaw was born at Woodfield House in Yorkshire West Riding in 1850. In 1861, Ada and her four brothers & sisters were all scholars. There is a big gap between her & her elder brother, Robert Bentley Shaw, who is eighteen, which suggests perhaps that her father had more than one wife, or that some siblings had left home or died? There are four or five servants in the house, including Kate Mahoney, aged 50, a married woman from Ireland, who is described as Upper Nurse; having another person to assist her, Ann E Hirst aged 23, born in Yorkshire. Then there is a cook, Jane Abbott, also born in Yorkshire & a kitchen-maid, Catherine Corbert from Ireland. As the children are all described as scholars, one comes to the conclusion that perhaps one of the children has a physical disability.
