About Herbert Lancaster Shaw
About Herbert Lancaster Shaw: In 1871 census he was 7 years old, living with his parents Bentley & Jane Elizabeth Shaw in Woodfield House, Lockwood, Huddersfield, Yorkshire. His sister Constance Honora Shaw, aged 17 was also present. There are seven servants in the house, including Kate Mahoney, who is described as Upper Nurse, and who came from Ireland. The other six servants include William Darwin from Lincolnshire, who is the Butler. Herbert Lancaster Shaw is in the records of Oxford University as matriculating on 22 April 1884, aged 20 from Charsley's Hall. This hall was founded & run by William Henry Charsley (1820-1900), who matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford and then migrated to St Mary Hall after he was blinded in an accident, so it was a hall for students some of whom were struggling or disabled in some way. In c. 1890, Herbert married Charlotte Shaw (1871) & they had a son Neville Lancaster Shaw, who in the 1901 census was 10, probably born in August 1890, as in 1891 census he was 7 months old. In the 1901 census, Herbert & Charlotte & Neville were living at Ashfield in Herefordshire. In March 1894 Herbert was living at Ashfield, Ross in the county of Hereford. & is the last executor listed in Jane Elizabeth Shaw's Probate, which reveals that she left a fortune to her heirs. {Huddersfield Chronicle, Saturday 12 May 1894, p.4} Perhaps the family paid a visit to the Lebanon in the Middle East?
