About Alexander Lindsay Clark

Alexander Clark was normally known as Sandy in NZ, to avoid confusion with his father in law Alexander Turnbull, and later also his son Alex who was born in 1873 . He was born at Millport, Cumbrae, Bute in 1837. The family moved back to Calderbank, Lanarkshire about 1850 and Alexander met and married Williamina Turnbull from Proven Mill, Glasgow in 1861, a few months before emmigrating to Otago on the "Nelson" in May 1862. Sandy and Williamina built their home on land at Sheppard Road on Hoopers Inlet and had a family of eleven children. The place was known as "Happy Home", one of several properties which the Clarks purchased in the area. Although christened as a Presbyterian in Scotland he was buried as a "Baptist" after his death in 1926. His grave is with his wife in the Portobello cemetery.
