About Alice de Essex

From MedLands:

a) ADELISA ([1105]-after 1185). Leland quotes a Vere manuscript which names "Albericus de Ver pater meus…Adeliza filia Gilberti de Clare" and "Adeliza de Estsexa, filia Alberici Ver et Adelizæ" who married "Rogerus filius Richardi, nepos comitis Hugonis Bigot"[1311]. “Roesia comitissa” donated property to Colne priory, for the souls of “patris mei Alberici et Gaufridi domini mei”, by undated charter, witnessed by “…Willielmo de Veer, Adelisa de Veer, Adelisa de Essexa”[1312]. The Rotuli de Dominabus of 1185 records property “Arenho” held by “Alicia de Essex…lx annorum…amita comitis Willelmi et soror comitis Albrici”, adding that she had “ii filios milites et i filiam maritatam Johanni Constabulario Cestrie”[1313]. The same source, in another passage, records that “Alicia de Essex…est iiii.xx annorum” (presumably indicating "4 x 20 years" i.e. 80, which appears to be a more accurate assessment than the statement in the earlier passage that she was 60 years old, given the general chronology of these families) and held “Clavering sicut dotem suam, de feodo Henrici de Essex”, adding that she had “ii filios milites" and land "in comitatu Norhamton…de feodo comitis Willelmi"[1314]. m firstly ROBERT de Essex, son of [ROBERT FitzSwein & his wife Gunnor Bigod] (-[1132/40]). [1315]m secondly ROGER FitzRichard Lord of Warkworth, son of RICHARD & his wife --- (-before 1185).

From The Direct Pedigree of the Barons Eure of Witton:

Roger was Baron of Warkworth by gift of Henry II. He added a bend sable to his paternal coat. He married Adeliza, but there is a slight discrepancy as to her surname. By the old Eure pedigree she was Adeliza, daughter and co-heir of Henry de Essex by Adeliza de Vere, sister of Aubrey de Vere, first Earl of Oxford; and the De Essex arms are given as gules, a cross (plain), and a bordure engrailed or, and this coat would, in taht case, come in as a quartering between Lizures and Fitz Walter. But by another pedigree she is called Adeliza, daughter of Aubrey de Vere, Earl of Oxford, and widow of Henry [wrong brother - it was Robert] de Essex, adn if this be so the quartering must be omitted. The child of this marriage is a memorable man in the family, for with him is first established the surname of Eure.

Several possible parents:

1) http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~dantrogers/pafg1373.htm#28124

Robert de Vere and Matilda de Fernel

2) http://gedcom.surnames.com/burgess_jim/gp7931.htm

Alberice de Vere and Adelezia de Clare [this is likeliest, given her husband's and therefore her dates]

3) Robert de Vere, 3rd Earl of Oxford and Isabel de Bolbec [she's probably his sister]

Source <Gendering the master narrative: women and power in the Middle Ages> Par Maryanne Kowaleski: "... Alice de Vere's daughter Alice (sister of William de Vere) married Roger (d. 1177), son of Richard, Lord of Warkworlh and nephew of Earl Hugh Bigod of Norfolk (BcthelL.."

"Alianor de Essex" is Adelizia de Vere, widow of Robert (not Henry) de Essex. She is not the daughter of Henry de Essex. (No such daughter is attested in extant charters.)
