Andrew Belcher was born at Danbury, Essex, England [citation needed] about 1615, the son of Thomas Belcher of London and Ann Solme, daughter of Andrew Solme.[1] His grandfather was Robert Belcher, a weaver from Kingswood, Wiltshire, England.[2]

He married in England to a woman whose father was of Dedham, co. Essex. She probably died (without bearing children prior to her husband's immigration.[3]

The first records of Andrew Belcher in New England occurred in 1639, so it is evident that he migrated in 1639 or before. He settled in Cambridge[2]where in 1652 he received license to "sell beer and bread for entertainment of strangers and the good of the town."[3]

On October 1, 1639 he married Elizabeth Danforth, daughter of Nicholas Danforth[4]of Framingham, co. Suffolk and Cambridge Massachusetts.[3]Her brother was Deputy Governor Thomas Danforth and she had several other notable relatives. Andrew and Elizabeth Danforth were both in full communion at the Cambridge church in January 1658/9.[4]

The Children of Andrew and Elizabeth Belcher are as follows:

  1. Elizabeth Belcher was born August 17, 1640; married Pyam Blowers on March 31, 1668.
  2. Jemima Belcher was born April 5, 1642; married Joseph Sill on December 5, 1660.
  3. Martha Belcher was born July 26, 1644; married Jonathan Remington on July 13, 1664.
  4. Andrew Belcher was born January 1, 1647/8; married Sarah Gilbert, daughter of Jonathan Gilbert, marshall of the colony.
  5. Ann(a) Belcher was born January 1, 1649/50; married Samuel Ballard May 1, 1678.

Mary (Belcher) Russell and Ebenezer Belcher (died young) are also seen as children, but they are uncertain.

There is some confusion over the death date of Andrew Belcher. His grave at Cambridge has only a footstone, marked "A. B.," and is beside her wife's tomb stone which is inscribed:

"Here lyeth burried
Ye body of Elizabeth
Belcher, who was
formerly the wife of
Andrew Belcher late
of Cambridg deceased
who departed this life
June ye 26, 1680
AEatis sua 62."

The author, Whitmore, was inclined to believe that the June 26, 1680 date was for Elizabeth Belcher, not Andrew.[3] Andrew Belcher died about 1673 at Cambridge. [citation needed]
