Avrahom- Shabse Silver

Abraham -Shopse Silver (Charmetz) fought with the British in the Balfour Regiment. (The Jewish Legion) He had joined the Canadian Army. The photo of him in uniform was taken in England in June of 1918. Per his son, Larry Silver, Abrahom used to relate the story of how David Ben Gurion came to the states to enlist volunteers for the Jewish Legion. Abrahom joined up, and went overseas with Ben-Gurion. He also related how Ben-Gurion saved his life when they were bunkmates. Ben Gurion talked him into going AWOL when their batallion left on a mission led by Trumpaldor. The batallion was wiped out in an ambush. When the state of Israel was established, Ben Gurion sent Abrahom Shabse a medal, which is now enshrined in a museum in Israel. Per his son, Abrahom also got a medal from the British, but he returned it when the British established Cyprus to preclude Jewish refugees from entering Palestine.
