Captain William Long, who served in the Revolutionary War was born circa 1755 and died August 26, 1814, Cumberland Co., KY

Captain William Long was the father of Arthur Long (10 Apr 1795 - 2 Nov 1863, Jackson Co., AL)

Ancestry of Captain William Long

There were a number of William Longs in Augusta County at the time. According to a descendant (see this comment), the William Long who was Capt. William Long's father "married Margaret Lewis (bn abt 1726 in Ireland to Col. John Lewis & Margaret Lynn).

Capt. Long's father leased 467 acres, part of the Mill tract in Beverly Manor for 96 years, 20 Feb 1756 Deed Book 7, pg 296, and in turn leased Samuel Wilson 50 acres on Lewis Creek, Nov 1759 Deed Book 8, pg 231. This information was delivered by Wm Crow (Margaret Long's second husband) in Sept 1767.

William died before 20 May 1760 as his will dated 16 Apr 1760 was proven and recorded on 20 May 1760: Page 378

In the name of God Amen the 16 day of April 1760 I William Long of Staunton and Augusta County being sick & weak in Body but of Perfect mind and memory thanks be given to god therefore Calling to mind the mortality of my Body knowing that its appointed for all men once to die first I recommend to God my [soul an]d for my body I recommend it to the Earth to be buried in a Christian like and Decent form at the Discretion of my Executors and as Touching my Estate first I Bequeath to Margret Long my welbeloved wife the third of all my moveable Estate and likewise I leave to William Long wellbeloved son the two other thirds of my moveabele Estate together with all my concern and Intered of Lands and Lotts in and about Staunton and Jacksons River and I thesaid William Long aforesaid do Disanul all and every other Testament made byme before the Date of this, this only to be my only last will and Testament and Do now Constitue and Appoint my wellbeloved Brothers Thomas Lewis and Charles Lewis to be Executors to my and all that Concern to be Ordered at their Discreation in a Just and faithful manner and now to Confirm all I hereinto set my hand & seal the Year and Day above

The will was proven May 20, 1760 with Thomas, Charles, and Andrew Lewis paying the County Justices one thousand pounds to bind themselves as executors and administrators of the estate. The estate inventory/appraisment was admitted to record on 19 Nov 1760.

William the younger was only 15 apparently when his uncles, brothers to mother, Margaret Lewis Long, were named as his guardians. Again citing Chalkley:

ORDER BOOK No. XIV.page 162NOVEMBER 21, 1770. Page (150) William Long. aged 15, orphan of Wm. Long, chose Thomas and Charles Lewis guardians.

Margaret later married a second time to William Crow and had a several more children by him which would certainly account for the use of the name Crow for William's son John's middle name.
