About Christian Fast

Patriot of the American Revolution for VIRGINIA - PENNSYLVANIA with the rank of PRIVATE. DAR Ancestor # A039243

Lochry's Pa. Bt. Rev War

Christian Fast was born in Maryland, the youngest son of German immigrants, Johann Nicklaus Fast and Cadarina Dörner, who were from Göcklingen, Germany (Nicklaus) and Ilbesheim, Germany (Cadarina), although he spent much of his youth in Pennsylvania/Virginia. He joined the Virginia Militia in 1780, as a substitute for his brother Jacob, and helped man a local fort for a short while. In mid-1781 he joined the Pennsylvania Militia, soon becoming part of an expedition headed by General George Rogers Clark (the older brother of William Clark, of Lewis & Clark fame), under the direct command of Colonel Archibald Lochry. The purpose of the expedition was to capture Fort Detroit, while subduing some of the intervening Native American tribes who had sided with the British. Christian, however, along with many of his fellows, was very soon captured by the Delaware Indians in an engagement usually referred to as "Lochry's Defeat".

Large numbers of the prisoners were killed after capture, but Christian, who was wounded during the fight, was given the personal protection of a Delaware warrior of some fame, Tom Lyons, who admired the young Fast's courage. Lyons was especially entertained by his ability to walk on his hands, something he had not seen before. In fact, Christian was adopted into the Delaware tribe, complete with appropriate grooming and attire. As an "Indian" he met some notable historical individuals: the Delaware chief, Captain Pipe, as well as Simon Girty, a much-hated American who now sided with the Indians and the British.

Christian Fast's life as a Delaware lasted about a year, but when it became clear that his own home area was about to fall under their attack, he escaped and returned in time to warn his relatives and others in the vicinity. He eventually lived out his relatively long life in Ohio among some of the same Lenape he had known during the war.

The story of Christian Fast has proven to be sufficiently exciting as to have been the subject of an adventure book written for young teens.

Reprinted privately every 10 years. Christian Fast, the youngest known son of Nicklaus Faust and Cadarina (Danner) Faust is well known in history as having enlisted with the famous George Rogers Clark Expedition against the Indians.

GEDCOM Note

He is one of the most romantic figures of Ashland County's pioneer days. And the reason for this is not hard to find. For Fast, as a youth, had many thrilling experiences as an Indian captive in the forest of Ohio; he heard the death cries of Col. William Crawford when that friend of Gen. George Washington was burned at a stake in what is now Wyandotte County, Ohio; he knew that most execrated of white man, Simon Girty, and he was with Girty later known as "the white savage", when Girty led a force of 400 Indians in September, 1782, in an attack on Fort Henry, where Wheeling, West Virginia now stands. It will be recalled by the student of history that Fort Henry was saved by the heroism of Betty Zane, who brought ammunition to the beleaguered defenders and enabled them to repulse the invaders. Having read often of his exploits, how he was adopted by a tribe of Delaware Indians, and how he made his escape on the last night of the

GEDCOM Note

Siege of Fort Henry.

GEDCOM Note

For this reason the Ashland County Society has given special attention to the matter of aiding visitors to find Christian Fast's grave. Fayette County, Pennsylvania, where Fast was born June 22, 1762, was then a part of Westmoreland County. In the summer of 1781, Fast, then 18 years old joined a force of 200 Pennsylvania Militiamen for an expedition down the Ohio River to assist General George Rogers Clark and his troops in repelling Indians attacking frontier settlements in Kentucky.

GEDCOM Note

The Pennsylvanians were divided into two parties, young Fast being in the rear party. Some distance above the falls of the Ohio the rear party was heading for shore to have some breakfast when forces of Indians on both sides of the river attacked them. Young Fast was in a large boat that had just gone around. Before the attack ended, 70 of the 100 men aboard it had been slain. Though he was wounded in the hip, Fast leaped into the water and swam to the opposite shore, only to be confronted by three savages. He plunged again into the river, the Indians firing at him. One of the balls grazed his cheek but he managed to get back to the houseboat just as the men aboard were surrendering. Taking their captives to shore, preparations were made at once by the Indians for the trip to their village at Upper Sandusky. The prisoners were divested of practically all their clothes and then compelled to carry the bundles while their bodies were

GEDCOM Note

stung and torn by nettles and briars.

GEDCOM Note

It was a terrible journey, and though young Fast was accustomed to the hardships of pioneer life, his sufferings became so great that he finally bent his head to the old Warrior who had taken charge of him and urged the savage to tomahawk him. His feet were raw and his legs and body sorely lacerated. He made it known to his captor that he could go no further this way. The old Indian ha compassion on him and permitted Fast to put on his clothes. During the remainder of the journey Fast was treated more humanely especially after an incident at an Indian camp. The Indians had one of their dances around the fire, after which they called upon their captives to entertain them. When it came Fast's turn, he showed them that his feet were too sore for him to dance in the usual way, but said he would do a dance on his hands. He did, and the Indians roared with laughter especially when he did some somersaults.

GEDCOM Note

He made such a hit with his captives that he was not compelled to run the gauntlet, either along the way or on arrival at Upper Sandusky, though the other prisoners were subjected to the ordeal. The other prisoners were exchanged after they had been at Upper Sandusky awhile but Fast was adopted into a Delaware family to take the place of a young brave who had been slain. Fast's hair was torn out except for a scalp lock; his ears and nose were pierced and brooches were put in; and after his "white blood had been washed away", and he had donned Indian garb, he became a son of the tribe and received the name "Molunthe". Pioneer records disclose many incidents of Fast's life in the region of the Tymochtee with his Indian Warrior brothers. He received many favors at the hands of the notorious Simon Girty, Captain Pipe, Tom Lyons and other Delaware.

GEDCOM Note

Opportunity for Fast to escape and return to his home came in September 1782, when he was in the force under Girty that besieged Fort Henry. The Indians, after three days and two nights of attempting to capture the fort were preparing to give it up and attack frontier settlements in Western Pennsylvania.

GEDCOM Note

Fast, realizing that his family was in peril, decided to escape and aroused his adopted brother Kawase and asked him to go with him to the river to get water. Kawase very sleepily said, "Wait until morning, Molunthe." "No," replied Fast. "I can't. I'm too thirsty. Come along, Kawase." By this time Kawase was asleep again but Fast aroused him and insisted on him going with him to the river. Finally full of sleep Kawase said, "Go yourself. Molunthe; you can find the way alright." That was just what Fast wanted, so taking a bucket, he left. To make the Indians think he drowned, he left the bucket on the bank of the river and headed for Fort Rice, on Buffalo Creek, Washington County, Pennsylvania. In the early morning, from a place of confinement, he saw the force of Indians divide and proceed toward the settlement of Fort Rice.

GEDCOM Note

Following a ridge between the two trails, he managed to get ahead of the Indians and succeeded in warning the people at the fort, who successfully resisted the Indian assault, and then made his way to his home in Fayette County.

GEDCOM Note

The members of his family were alarmed when he appeared and he had difficulty convincing them that he was not a savage. Fast was small, had hair as black as a raven, dark eyes, and a swarthy skin. His parents were unable to recognize him. Indeed they were much alarmed at his presence, fearing that he was a genuine savage acting as a decoy. He attempted to calm their fears by assuring them in their German tongue that his name was Fast and that he was really their own son. At length his mother recalling some peculiarity about the pupils of his eyes and some spots on his breast, recognized him.

GEDCOM Note

Later, he located in Greene County, Pennsylvania, married and raised a family. In 1815, at the age of 53, he moved to what is now Orange Township, Ashland County, Ohio, and had scarcely arrived when an old warrior and a number of other Indians came to the camp where the Fast's

GEDCOM Note

were preparing supper. As the aged Indian neared Fast he gave a shout of joy. "Molunthe," he cried and grasped his hands in great friendliness. The old warrior was Tom Lyons, one of Fast's captors in 1781. He told Fast the Indians had always thought he had fallen into the river and drowned.

GEDCOM Note

During the next seven years, members of the Delaware tribe on hunting trips often camped in that neighborhood and were very friendly. They claimed Christian as a member of their tribe as having been formally adopted by the Delaware so many years before.

GEDCOM Note

At the time of his death on June 25, 1841, he was living in Orange Township, Richland County. Both he and his wife were buried near the town of Ashland where the County Historical Society marks his grave.

"The information which is at hand concerning Christian, the youngest known son of Nicklaus and Cadarina FAUST, offers a greater field for romantic imagination than do the stories of other sons of the family. Born May 20, 1762, in Frederick County, Maryland, he was a lad of thirteen years living with his parents in Monongalia County, Virginia, now Fayette County, Pennsylvania, almost on the frontier line of the Colonies, when the first shot of the Revolutionary War was fired in far-off Massachusetts. Living on his father's plantation far removed from the Atlantic coast, he most probably had not heard of Paul Revere, the Minute Men, the famous Bridge, the firing of the shot that was to be heard 'round the world - even unto the present day; yet in avery few years he was to hear its reverberations and respond in a heroic way.

GEDCOM Note

Being the youngest son, he was doubtless somewhat further removed sentimentally from the stories of the Fatherland and earlier days of the family in America than were his brothers. He was a young colonial American. When he was a youth of sixteen or seveteen years, he enlisted in the service of the Colonies in the spring of 1778 or 1779, serving seven months under Captain Joseph NEEL, Col. Zachariah MORGAN's Virginia Regiment. In May or June of 1780, he substituted for his brother Jacob at Jared's Fort and served in Col. MINER's Virginia Regiment for one month, and later for two months at the same place under the same Colonel. In June or July, he enlisted in the Fayette County, Pennsylvania Cavalry under Captain Michael GATT (or CATT) for General George Rogers CLARK's famous expedition against the Indians; and while in a detachment under Col. LAUGHRY near the mouth of Laughry's Creek, the entire detachment was either killed or taken captive by the Indians. He was carried by his captors to the Miami country in Ohio and kept until the summer or fall of 1782. The story of his captivity is well known. From that slight description of his personal appearance - small and with "Hair as black as a raven, dark eyes, and a swarthy skin". It is a facinating picture we get of this clever, agile, attractive youth, named by the Indians "MOLUNTHE", finally making his escape, returning home, and being recognized by his mother, Cadarina, by "some peculiarity about the pupils of his eyes" and affectionately embraced by her.

GEDCOM Note

Minor and served in that station one month and was regularly dismissed

GEDCOM Note

but received no written discharge.

GEDCOM Note

In June or the first of July he thinks in 1781 he was residing in what is

GEDCOM Note

now Fayette County Pennsylvania. A draft was ordered in the Militia of

GEDCOM Note

one fifth part to go in "Clark's Campaigne" and if five persons furnished a

GEDCOM Note

man they escaped a draft. His two brothers, two brothers-in-law and

GEDCOM Note

himself belonged to the same company and he agreed to go in the

GEDCOM Note

expedition to clear them of a draft. Accordingly he entered into the

GEDCOM Note

service of the United States under Capt. Michael Gatt. Melzor Baker was

GEDCOM Note

Lieutenant in the Pennsylvania Militia. They marched to Wheeling and

GEDCOM Note

there joined General Clark's expedition against the Indians. He remained

GEDCOM Note

at Wheeling three or four weeks waiting for the arrival of Col. Laughery

GEDCOM Note

and then set out with the Army down the Ohio in boats without him. At

GEDCOM Note

the mouth of the little Kerkaway an express arrived informing Gen. Clark

GEDCOM Note

that Laughery had arrived at Wheeling and was following on but had no

GEDCOM Note

provisions. The General ordered Major Cracroft and nine men of whom he

GEDCOM Note

was over into a boat and provisions until Laughery arrived, then join his

GEDCOM Note

party and follow on. When Laughery arrived, he joined his party and

GEDCOM Note

continued down the river. After passing the mouth of the Big Miami mear

GEDCOM Note

the mouth of Laughery's Creek the whole detachment was killed or taken

GEDCOM Note

by the Indians. He was wounded in the hip by a ball. Col. Laughery was

GEDCOM Note

tomahawked after he surrendered. Many others died. He now recollects

GEDCOM Note

the names of the following officers who were taken prisoners: Major

GEDCOM Note

Cracroft, Capt. Orr, Lieut. Baker of the Militia he thinks, and Capt. Thomas

GEDCOM Note

Shakely he believes of the Regular Army. He was taken by the Indians back

GEDCOM Note

into the Miami country and kept a prisoner among them and wandered about

GEDCOM Note

in the woods with them.

GEDCOM Note

In the summer or fall of 1782 having obtained their confidence he was

GEDCOM Note

permitted to go with them on an expedition from Girty's --- against

GEDCOM Note

Wheeling. Col. McGee commanded the expedition. Simon Girty, James

GEDCOM Note

Girty, George Girty and Capt. Elliott were white men in the expedition.

GEDCOM Note

They moved slowly eastward and on the way were joined by a company of

GEDCOM Note

mounted Englishmen from Detroit. They crossed the Ohio about three

GEDCOM Note

miles below Fort Wheeling and surrounded it and held a party, but the men

GEDCOM Note

in the fort refused to surrender. They then kept up a fire for a few days

GEDCOM Note

and tried to burn the fort. A proposition was made to penetrate the

GEDCOM Note

country and make an attack upon the settlement. The family into which he

GEDCOM Note

was adopted refused to join the party. The night after the party set out he

GEDCOM Note

ran away from the Indians and the next day he came upon their trail and

GEDCOM Note

followed until by the signs he knew was near them. He then took a

GEDCOM Note

circuitous route and ran all day - rested at night and the next day about

GEDCOM Note

four o'clock arrived at Ross's Fork in the settlement on the waters of Ten

GEDCOM Note

Mile now in Washington Country and alarmed the settlement. About

GEDCOM Note

sundown the Indians attacked it but they were prepared and resisted

GEDCOM Note

successfully. The next day he arrived at his father's about the first of

GEDCOM Note

December 1782 having been about 17 months as he thinks from his best

GEDCOM Note

recollection. His officers were so dispersed that he never received any

GEDCOM Note

certificate of his services nor any pay. With respect to the date of the

GEDCOM Note

Campaigne he speaks from recollection and may be incorrect. After the

GEDCOM Note

Revolution he continued to reside in Fayette County until the spring of

GEDCOM Note

1816 when he moved to his present place of residence in Orange Township,

GEDCOM Note

Richland County, Ohio where he has resided ever since. And the said Fast

GEDCOM Note

respectfully is asking claim in whole to a or an annuity, except the

GEDCOM Note

present and he declares his name is not upon the pension roll in any state.

GEDCOM Note

He knows of the existence of no documentary evidence by which his

GEDCOM Note

services can be proved nor does he know of any person living by whom he

GEDCOM Note

can prove said services except Phillip Bowman whose affidavit is

hereunto ---.

GEDCOM Note

On the 23rd day of October 1832 personally appeared before the judge of

GEDCOM Note

a resident of Orange Township in the county of Richland and state of Ohio

GEDCOM Note

aforesaid aged seventy years who being duly sworn according to law do

GEDCOM Note

taken his oath makes the following declaration in order to obtain the

GEDCOM Note

benefits of the provisions made by the Act of Congress passed June 7th

GEDCOM Note

1832.

GEDCOM Note

That he was born in Frederick County Maryland the 22nd day of June

GEDCOM Note

1762. That he has a -- or a -- of this age in his Bible which he

GEDCOM Note

transcribed from his father's Bible. When about 10 or 11 years of age he

GEDCOM Note

moved with his parents and settled in Monougahula County Virginia. In the

GEDCOM Note

Spring of 1778 or 1779 he cannot recollect which but knows he was either

GEDCOM Note

16 or 17 he entered into the service of the United States as a volunteer in

GEDCOM Note

the Virginia Militia at Martin's Fort in said county under Capt. Joseph Neel

GEDCOM Note

and was stationed at Scott's Mill on the Mouougaheela River. David Gilkey

GEDCOM Note

was next in command in the station but he does not recollect what office

GEDCOM Note

he held. Col. Zacheriah Morgan was the Superior officer in that part of the

GEDCOM Note

country. He visited the station occasionally as an officer and once ordered

GEDCOM Note

the attachment from the station against the Tories. The attachment was

GEDCOM Note

stationed at this part to guard the frontiers. A part remained at the

GEDCOM Note

station and a part made excursions through the country between that and

GEDCOM Note

the Ohio River and took turns in the same alternately. He served a term of

GEDCOM Note

seven months and was regularly discharged late in the fall. He had a

GEDCOM Note

written discharge or certificate of his service which he gave his father to

GEDCOM Note

draw his pay and has never seen it since, thinks his father drew pay for

GEDCOM Note

his services.

GEDCOM Note

About the last of May or first of June 1780 he entered into the service of

GEDCOM Note

his brother Jacob Fast at Jared's Fort on Big Whitey and placed under Col.

GEDCOM Note

but received no written discharge.

GEDCOM Note

In June or the first of July he thinks in 1781 he was residing in what is

GEDCOM Note

now Fayette County Pennsylvania. A draft was ordered in the Militia of

GEDCOM Note

service of the United States under Capt.

GEDCOM Note

hereunto ---.
