Disputed Origins

No sources have been provided that indicate her parents were George Penn and Elizabeth Brinksworth. They are being disconnected from this profile, should a source be provided for this relationship they can be easily reattached. George Penn and William Penn, the Quaker, were related to each other. At this time Christian is not proven to be from the same family.

Biography

Christian Penn arrived on the ship Anne in 1623. She was given one acre in the 1623 land division, the list indicating her arrival with the group of Anne passengers.[1] She came as the maid of Mrs. Alice Southworth who married William Bradford in August soon after the July arrival. Anne and Bradford had been fond of each other years before.[2]

Christian married first, as his third wife, ca. 1624/5 Pilgrim Francis Eaton. Francis' first wife was Sarah, and his second wife Dorothy, both of whom died at Plymouth.[3]

"ffrancis Eaton, Christian Eaton his wife, Samuel Eaton and Rahell Eaton" were part of lot 10 during the 1627 cattle division, their share being a heifer "of the last yeare called the white belyd heyfer" and two she goats.[1]

Francis died in 1633. 25 Nov 1633 "It was ordered: That whereas Franc[i]s Eaton, carpenter, late of Plymouth, deceased, died indebted far more than the estate of the said Franc[i]s would make good, insomuch as Christian, his late wife, durst not administer, it was ordered, that Mr. Thomas Prence & Mr. John Doane, in the behalf of the Court, should enter upon the estate, according to the inventory brought in upon oath the day of this present, that the creditors might have so far as the estate will make good, & the widow be freed & acquitted from any claim or demands of all or any his creditors whatsoever"[4]

July 1634, "Francis Billington and Christian Eaton widdow wer maried"[5][6]

Christian Billington and her husband, Francis, sold, 4 Nov 1639, her widows one third rights in the land that had belonged to Francis Eaton, to Jonathan and Love Brewster.[7] 5 Jan 1640/1 the court ordered them to give the Brewster's possesion of the land and Jonathna was to pay in corne the remainder owed.[8]

20 July 1666, Francis Billington of New Plymouth, planter, for 30s sold to William Crow of Plymouth, a piece of land that Francis formerly lived on. Both Christian and Francis signed the Deed.[9]

Christian Billingtonn died about 1684.[10][11] 1 Mar 1703/4 Isaac Billington in a petition stated that he cared for his aged parents seven years. This implies that Christian and Francis, who died in 1684, died about the same time.

  • The parents and origins of Christian Penn have never been discovered
  • A Christian Penn was bp 9 Aug 1607 in Croscombe, Somerset, England with father listed as "W.P" but may not be identical to the immigrant. The age would be correct.
  • Immigrated by herself on the Anne in 1623 according to Robert Charles Anderson
  • Birth: 1607 Unknown
  • Death: Jul. 13, 1684 Middleboro Plymouth Massachusetts, USA
  • Pilgrim Francis Eaton married 3rd, about 1624. CHRISTIAN PENN , a passenger on the Anne;
  • She married 2nd, in July 1634, Francis Billington, son of JOHN BILLINGTON.

False Claim: # Her maternal uncle George Penn from Birdham was already living in Plymouth MA - not true there is no record of George Penn before 1640 in the Plymouth Colony records according to Robert Charles Anderson. There is a claim Christiana's uncle Giles was a sea captain based in Bristol but no evidence is seen for this claim.

While she did not come to America on the Mayflower, she arrived shortly thereafter, between 1621 - 1632.

Nine children. m. Jul 1634, in Plymouth, Plymouth, MA, to Francis Billington,

In July 1634, Francis married Christian Eaton, the widow of Mayflower passenger Francis Eaton who had died the previous year autumn.

Christian brought three of her own children, and one step-child from her deceased husband's previous marriage, all under the age of 14.

With Francis Billington, she had nine more children.

They raised their family at Plymouth, and moved in their later years to Middleboro, where they both died in 1684.

The English Ancestry and Homes of the Pilgrim Fathers, p. 156: "CHRISTIAN PENN

THIS passenger is assumed to be a female but no connection with any other passenger is known. She received one share in the 1627 division.

As the second wife of Francis Eaton (q. v.) of the Mayflower bears this rare baptismal name it seems probable that she married him between 1627 and 1633."

The English Ancestry and Homes of the Pilgrim Fathers, Additions and Corrections p. vii:

"Page 156: CHRISTIAN PENN.

She received one share in the 1623 division.

As Christian Eaton she received one share in the 1627 division, so she married Francis Eaton before 1627.

As they had a daughter, Rachell in 1627 they probably married around 1625." Mayflower Births & Deaths, Vol. 1, page 448, <1>:

John Billington2 was living at the time of the May 1627 Cattle Division but deceased at the time of his father's death in Sept. 1630. Francis Billington2's year of birth is uncertain due to conflicting records. He was thought to be "aged forty years or thereabouts" in 1649 (b. c1909) ; age 68 in 1674 (b. c1606) ; and age 80 when he died in 1684 (b. c1604) . <2> p. 106, There is no file sheet listing all the children of Francis & Christian so they have been added for easier reference. Christian (Penn) Eaton is said to have died c1684 (Stoddard:115 says July 1684). The petition of her son, Isaac Billington, (1 Mar. 1703/4), implies she died the same year as her husband Francis..."They were near 80 years old when they dyed: & it is now 18 years since." Unfortunately, the time span he mentions does not prove Christian died in 1684 but rather 1686. His referral to "18 years since" could refer not to the death of his parents but to the death of his last surviving parent, Christian, in 1686. <3> p. 106, "Bowman gives his date of death as 20 Aug. although in checking the reference given (MD 16:62) it clearly says 10 [underlined] Aug. <4> p. 106, Four unnamed children...." and another, living in 1651, whose name is unknown.

Francis Billington lived at Plymouth until 1669 when he moved to Middleboro and occupied land granted to him as one of the "First Comers." He lived htere until his death, except for a few years during King Philip's War when he fled to Plymouth for safety. On 18 April 1642 his daughter Elizabeth was apprenticed; and 14 January 1642/3 he bound out son Joseph, "aged vi or vii" and two daughters, probably Martha and Mary, one five years old and the other even younger.

Bradford stated in 1651 that Francis Billington had eight children.

On 2 March 1642 Francis Billington of New Plymouth, planter, sold to Mr. John Atwood of Plymouth, land in Plymouth.

In 1674 Francis Billington deposed that he was aged 68.

In his old age Francis Billington was dependent on his son Isaac for support and died intestate. No probate record appears, although son Isaac petitioned the probate court in 1703/4 for title to all his father's Middleboro lands, stating he had had sole care of his parents in their old age. A Plymouth County Court Case of Sept. 1722, brought by Isaac's daughter Desire 4 (Billington) Bonney and her husband, James, shows that Francis Billington died intestate leaving issue two sons and five daughters, viz: son Joseph (eldest, who inherited a double portion) and Isaac; daughters Elizabeth, Mary, Dorcad, Mercy and Martha, with a total of eight shares in the estate. A 3 Dec. 1719 quiclaim deed from Francis's father Francis and grandfather (unnamed) Billington (Family #12), reading "my father Francis and grandfather (unnamed) Billington" seems to imply a son Francis, Jr. But in the absence of any mention of such a son in contemporaneous Plymouth records, coupled with the fact that Francis's 4 deed evidently transferred the shares of Joseph Billington, we conclude that the deed contains a clerical error. The original must have read "my father Joseph [underlined] and grandfather Francis [underlined] Billington." Indications are that the seven children named in the Bonney suit and their progeny were the only survivors of Francis 2 Billington. A more detailed account has been published. She was one of the few single women who came on the Pilgrim ships, the females on these being mostly either married women, or adolescent children. In the 1623 Plymouth land division, Christian Penn received one acre as a passenger on the Anne in 1623. Perhaps Christian knew when she came that she was soon to become the third wife of Francis Eaton. It looks as though her marriage to him had been arranged beforehand by letter. Her elderly husband did not long survive his third marriage and his young widow was married in 1634 to Francis Billington. This was probably a love-match, otherwise Christian would not have been willing to become a member of the disgraced and ostracised Billington family. Sorrows thickened around this pair who had eight children they could not support. That Christian should have been obliged to see her children "bound out" into unsympathetic families must have been an overwhelming trial.

"Anne" & "Little James" The vessels parted company at sea; Pilgrim Ship the "ANNE" arrived Plymouth, New England in the latter part of June or July 1623, and Pilgrim Ship the "LITTLE JAMES" some week or ten days later; bringing new settlers along with many of the wives and children that had been left behind in Leiden, South Holland when Pilgrim Ship the "MAYFLOWER" departed in 1620. A lot of these people aboard these ships are the rest of the families of persons already in the Colony.

CHRISTIAN PENN is listed as one of the passengers.

On the passenger list of the 'Anne' to Plymouth MA. She travelled with the Oldham family. Her maternal uncle George Penn from Birdham was already living in Plymouth MA.

They arrived at Plymouth in about 1624. Christiana was about 17 at that time.

My 8th great grand aunt.

Left home at 16. First marriage at 18. Second marriage at 27.

Married Francis Eaton who died in 1633 then married Francis Billington in 1634 There were at least 7 children from this marriage.

Francis Eaton was on the passenger list of the Mayflower.

There were 2 children from her first marriage - Rachel & Benjamin Eaton.

Descendant of Christian & Francis Billington was 20th President of the United States of America, James Abram Garfield.

(Can be traced from their youngest child, Mercy.)

Another descendant from their child Martha Billington is the film actor Richard Gere. (I have traced these descendants to confirm the facts). Mary Billigton is the ancestor of the Height family in Alberta Canada (in contact with them)

Christiana's uncle Giles was a sea captain based in Bristol. He probably arranged Christiana's voyage.
