About Colonel William Shreve
A Patriot of the American Revolution for New Jersey with the rank of COLONEL. DAR# A104425
William Shreve was disowned for his military activities as early as 1759 when he fought in the French and Indian Wars. On 8/26/1775, he was commissioned as a Second Major, First Regiment., Burlington, co., NJ. On Sept 28, 1776, he was promoted to first major; 3/15/1777, Lieutenant Colonel and on April 18,1778 was made Colonel. He served for many additional years. In August 1782 his son, Richard, was elected Captain of the troop of Light Horse belonging to the same regiment.
Colonel Shreve lost his home to fire and goods estimated at 1400 pounds when the British marched through Burlington Co.
At the end of the Revolutionary War, William went into the mercantile business and failed. He assigned all his goods and lands to his creditors.
He and his third wife, Anne, went to Pa with Isreal Shreve. However, he returned to Burlington Co as they didn't care for Pa.
William again went into business and succeeded as he left an estate worth $2038.00.
During the Revolutionary war, William served as Col. of the First Regiment (Burlington County, NJ). The N. J. Militia performed efficient service in supporting the Continental line at Long Island, Trenton, Princeton, Monmouth and other important battles.
William Shreve was born August 4, 1737 at Springfield, Burlington County, New Jersey to Benjamin and Rebecca French Shreve. He married Anna Ivins May 8, 1756 in Springfield and their children were: Jeremiah Warder, Amy, Richard, Isaac, Kezia, Samuel and Anna.
Having been raised a Quaker, William was disowned by his family for his military activities as early as 1759 when he fought in the French and Indian War. He also fought during the Revolutionary War, being commissioned as a second major, first regiment, Burlington County, New Jersey on August 26, 1775. He was promoted to first major on September 28, 1776, lieutenant colonel on March 15, 1777 and colonel on April 18, 1778.
When the British marched thru Monmouth June 3, 1778, they plundered, burned his house and barn and destroyed his property to the value of 1355.15 pounds. After the war, he was a shopkeeper in Mansfield, also owning ships, but in 1782 his business failed and everything went to his creditors.
His first wife Anna had died before 1779 and he married Ann Woodard, widow of Joseph Reckless, July 17, 1779 in Burlington County. They had a child named William. In 1788, William the father, his wife and others crossed the mountains and settled in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. They eventually went back to New Jersey, not liking Pennsylvania, and again went into business, this time succeeding. William died in 1812 in Burlington County and is buried somewhere in that county. William Shreeve's Will 1810 Burlington, New Jersey William Shreeve Will 1 May 1810 To all whom these presents shall or may come. greeting know ye that I, William Shreeve of the township of New Hanovercounty of Burlington state of New Jersey former being in health and in sound mind and good disposing memory do make this my last will and testament as touching my worldly estate in manner form following that is to say in the first place my will is that my just debts and funeral charges be paid out of my estate by my hereafter named Exectors. Item I will and bequeath to my son Richard Shreeve the sum eighty eight dollars that he received of Joseph Lemmon in the year of our Lord one thousand and seven hundred eighty eight and twelve dollars in cash current money. Item I gave to m son Isaac Shreeve one hundred dollars. Item I gave to my daughter Amy Ridgeway deceased children one hundred dollars to be paid equally among them living when the youngest arrives at age. Item I gave to my son-in-law Nathan Shumard one hundred dollars . Item I gave to my granddaughter Rebecca Bayley $25. Item I gave to my well beloved wife Ann Shreeve all the real and personal estate that belonged to her at thetime I married her and half my real and personal estate when the just debt is paid to her and her heirs and assigns and legacies mentioned heretofore which I gave to each legate to them and their heirs and assigns forever. Item I gave personal estate to her and her heirs and assigns forever and also I gave to my daughter, Keziah Shreeve all her mothers wearing apparel and lastly I ordain and appoint my dearly beloved wife Ann Shreeve and daughter Keziah and my cousin Alexander Shreeve to be my lawful executors unto this my last will and testament hereby giving full power and absolute authority to execute the same and it is my will that my executors sell my lands and mills as they think best utterly disannulling all other wills and settlements by me heretofore made and confirming this alone my hand and seal this first day of May in the year of Lord One thousand 8 hundred and ten sealed signed and published and pronounced by the said William Shreeve as his last will and testament in thepresence of us.
