"Obituary Notice in Sherburne News, Thursday April 30, 1903" Cordelia A Alcott died Monday April 20, 1903. She was born in the town of Columbus on September 19, 1832 and married Russell H Alcott on April 23, 1851, an efficient teacher in the Sherburne School.

On the outbreak of the Civil War Mr. Alcott quit civilian life and enlisted in a Michigan Regiment. He had been a soldier in the Mexican War and that experience gained him a Captaincy. The sudden news of his death was such a shock to Mrs. Alcott that she never fully recovered from it; and the long years following have been those of invalidism.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Alice G. Lathrop of Sherburne and Mrs. Floy M. Upham of Shortsville, both of whom were with her in these last days.

The funeral was held at her late residence on Thursday the 23 at 2p.m. the Rev. J.W. Griffith officiating and the remains buried in Sherburne West Hill Cemetery.

Russell entered the Civil War on August 16,1861 at Ann Arbor Michigan. He was commissioned an officer in Company A, Michigan 1st Infantry Regiment. He died in the second battle of Bull Run. Russell is not buried in West Hill Cemetery, he is buried in a mass grave at Arlington National Cemetery.
