About Ebenezer Elliott Mathews
Ebenezer Elliott was a veteran of the Revolutionary War, Continental Army.
Ebenezer Matthews was married to Mercy Peckham per DAR Pariot Index, p. 444. Their children are named as:
- Stephen married Lavina Purdy
- Fanny married Sam Dunham.
- Isaac married Elizabeth Sibley and they lived in Oxford Co., Ontario
- John was born 1 Mar 1803 in Stonington, CT and married Elizabeth Anderson
- Elizabeth married Winslow Balcom
- Nancy married Samuel Edison, Jr. in Vienna, Ontario in 1828
Ebenezer Matthews is supposed to have legally changed his name to ELLIOTT at the request of a childess aunt and inherited a farm in CT.
Evidence of Nancy Elliott Edison and Elizabeth Elliott Balcom being daughters of Ebenezer Matthews comes from letters found in Ebenezer's pension files. A letter from Mrs. Nancy E. Wadsworth (daughter of Elizabeth Elliott Balcom) states that Ebenezer Matthews is her grandfather. A letter from Nellie Edison Poyer (dau of William Pitt Edison and gr-dau of Nancy Elliot Edison) states that Ebenezer is her great-grandfather. From notes on file at the Edison House in Milan, OH, "Betty Balcom told Miss Metta Wadsworth that Ebenezer Elliott was her (Betty's) and Nancy Edison's father and that John Elliott was their brother. After the Revolution, the British offered grants of land in Nova Scotia... Ebenezer Elliott sold his farm in Stonington, CT and moved to Nova Scotia. When they got there, it proved to be barren land, so that he had to move his family and belongings to Vienna, Ontario."
Abner Matthews' sisters, Elizabeth and Esther had both died prior to 1773 so we have eliminated them as the possible Elliott Aunt. The problem is that according to CT records and HOTCHKISS family histories, there are no siblings named for Lois Hotchkiss. It is possible that there were other children of Obadiah Hotchkiss and Eunice Beach that are unknown.
