The distinction between immigrant and colonist is mistaken in the request below. Edward Gilman was an immigrant, not a colonist. The Gilmans removed to New England to set up permanent residence there and begin a new life. They were immigrants by definition and by actions. They would not be called Colonists. They were immigrants to an England Colony. Some families did remove to New England for business but kept most family and social/financial connections in England. They would be called Colonists. Most of the Gilman's connections also immigrated.

The difference is by definition, and it has to do with how permanent the relocation. It isn't related to if one is "integrating into an existing society or not". The distinction is how strong the connection to the origin country, not whether or not one assimilates with the preexisting society in the new location. The initial immigrants were settlers because they moved to wilderness or to areas "sparsely settled" by indigenous people considered inferior or uncivilized. But although the first groups would be called settlers, one could say that by the late 1600s in the larger urban areas and in 1700s, people moving to well established settlements would be immigrants to those settlements. For example, moving from London Eng to Boston, NYC or Philadelphia.

An immigrant moves to a new location with the intent to set up a "new life". If they create a new life (typically by recreating the former one), then they are immigrant settlers. If they mostly move and assimilate into the preexisting society, then they are just immigrants.

A colonist, on the other hand, is a person who moves to a new location but retains as much as possible the connection to the place of origin, and is only exploiting the new location until they either move on or move back. There were many families who thought of their stay in New England as not necessarily permanent. Eventually, those people who felt more like "colonists" went to Canada or returned to England after the revolution. Many trading family groups were more like colonists that immigrant settlers.

But since the words do not describe the exact thing, one could also say that certain people were colonists who immigrated to New England. They might also be early settlers in a new community, but they aren't actually "Immigrants" because they do not intend to necessarily stay in the new location. They haven't really left their old life and connections behind.

To distinguish the direction of travel, an emigrant moves away from a location.

The term contemporary at the time would have been removed.

Edward Gilman was an early immigrant settler of Hingham in the Massachusetts Bay Colony of England. He was not a colonist himself. He removed to New England and expected to start a new life in New England. Just FYI

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Surname has also been reported to be Gyllman and Gylman.

Edward was not an immigrant, integrating into an existing society, he was a "colonist" establishing an English colony on the American continent. Remember the AMERICAN COLONIES were English colonies, or Dutch colonies or French colonies, etc. that were established in the wilderness of the wild American continent. They brought to America their own culture and technology with them that had evolved over millennia in Europe. They colonized wild America with European people and methodologies. They were not immigrants integrating into another civilization. They colonized America with their own civilization.

An immigrant is someone how moves into, and adopts the culture and ways of an existing culture they travel to, whereas the English colonists brought with them their own culture, tools, and civilization to the wilderness of the New World.

They were colonists. Please amend his name to "Colonist" not "immigrant".
