About Elizabeth Whale
Biography
Widow Elizabeth Upson, who had a daughter Hannah by her first marriage, married Hugh Griffin about 1639.[1][2][3] [4] Her maiden name and first husband are unknown (see disputed first husband section below).[1]
Hugh died on June 27, 1656 at Sudbury. [5] His will mentions their children: Jonathan, Abigail, Sarah, Shemuel and Hannah (Upson), daughter of his wife Elizabeth by her previous marriage.[1][3] (Researchers should take care not to conflate this couple of Sudbury and their children with Humphrey Griffin who married Elizabeth Andrews in Ipswich whose will was probated in 19 Nov 1661).[6][1]
After his death, Elizabeth married third, Philemon Whale at Sudbury on Nov. 9, 1657, as his third wife. [5][1][2] [4][6]
Philemon died at Sudbury on Feb. 24, 1675. [5][6] His will dated Jan. 19, 1675 and probated on 4: 2: 1676 leaves bequests to his wife Elizabeth, and to William, Jacob, Joseph, and Benjamin, children of his daughter Elizabeth Moore.[1][7][6]
Sources indicate that Elizabeth lost property in the Indian attack on Sudbury in 1676, the year after her husband's death. [1][6][8]
Elizabeth died at Sudbury on Nov. 8, 1688. [5][1] [7][6]

Disputed first Husband Upson
The first husband of "Widow Elizabeth Upson" of Sudbury and father of Hannah Upson who married Edward wright is unknown. Exhaustive research into Thomas Upson of Connecticut and Stephen Upson who came in 1635 on the "Increase" and arrived in Boston late July 1635 has yielded no connection to this family. While Banks, Pope and Savage have searched for a connection in Boston records in fact no record of Stephen Upson of Boston has been found after his arrival. While we can't rule out that Stephen could have been a member of this family other than a shared surname there is no reason to suspect that he was.[1][6][10]
