Biography

Francis Peyton was a merchant and civil servant in the town of Alexandria. He served on its town council (1794-1797), then elected twice to serve as mayor (1797-1798, 1799-1800). He married Sarah Foushee on 20 October 1789.

Peyton served as a merchant with his shop and living quarters on King Street in downtown Alexandria. Additionally, he once owned a 24-acre tract known as "Stump Hill" outside the original town boundary lines. This land was further divided, and Peyton's remaining 11-acre plot stood near today's location at the Janney's Lane and Quaker Lane intersection, located near the Virginia Theological Seminary (as noted on his gravestone).

On March 2, 1801, in a "midnight appointment," John Adams nominated him a justice of the peace for Alexandria County in the District of Columbia. He was retained by incoming President Thomas Jefferson through his own nominated on January 6, 1802. Later in 1802, Jefferson appointed Peyton a commissioner of bankruptcy for Alexandria County and a lieutenant colonel in the District of Columbia militia.

NOTE:
He is often miscredited on gravestone and in other historical documents as participating in the American Revolution. However, subsequent research indicates his uncle of the same name, Francis Petyon served as a Colonel within the Loudoun County Militia during such time (1775-83). The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) has revised their record Ancestor #A089983 to require additional proof of service. The uncle is Ancestor #A089982. That said, he was (at least) a Lieutenant Colonel in the District of Columbia Militia in the early 1800s after the American Revolution.
