About George "Peter" Stagner
GEORGE PETER STAGNER
WAR OF 1812 SOLDIER
by June Beals
George Peter Stagner was born in 1768 according to his tombstone in Salem-Lloyd Cemetery, Marion Township, Fayette County, Ohio. His place of birth is not known but he may have come from Pennsylvania, as there are other Stagner families there.
On 28 August 1798 George took for his wife Mary Bishop, daughter of Henry and Catharine Schreyer Bischoff. Mary was born 5 July 1782, Adams County, Pennsylvania. The marriage took place in Berkeley County, (West) Virginia.
About 1805 Henry Bischoff (Bishop) and several of his sons and daughters migrated to Ross County, Ohio. Peter Stagner is listed as an old pioneer in "Pioneer Record of Ross County" by Putman and Finley.
The 1820 census of Ohio shows Peter, as he is more commonly called, living in Huntington Township, Ross County. He has a wife and four children. In 1830 he is located in the same place, a family of six persons.
Peter bought from his father-in-law 35 acres of land in November 1820. That same parcel was sold to Archibald Lockard, who married a daughter, 3 April 1834. Mary Stagner did not sign her dower rights, so it is presumed she had died. The Bishop Hill cemetery which was close to their home had many Bishop children, but no evidence of Mary Stagner.
In the 1840 census Peter is not listed, but living in the John B. Moore home is a male 60-70 years old. Mrs. Moore was Elizabeth Stagner, a daughter. Peter died 26 April 1845. No will or estate has been found. The six children were determined by marriages, census, locality, etc., but not one left an obituary to prove relationship.
Elizabeth K. born 22 June 1801, probably Virginia, married her first cousin John Bishop Moore, 19 May 1820. Sarah, born 1807 in Ross County, married 25 August 1827 Archibald Lockard. Nancy, born 1811, married 23 June 1831 Jacob Grim. Mary E., born 1 January 1815, married Elias Griffin 2 March 1839 Fayette County. Henry, born 19 January 1819 married Mary Ann Hagler 21 Januray 1841. Amos Jones, born 1822, married Mary E. Morris 6 January 1845, Fayette County. Elizabeth, Mary and Amos migrated to DeWitt County, Illinois about 1852.
The Ohio Militia records show Peter Stagner was a private in Capt. David Elliott's Company, 1 Regiment Ohio Militia. He served from July 28 to August 17, 1813, a total of 21 days.
