Gerrit was born in 1667 in Gelderland in the Netherlands and settled in the Cape Colony in about 1687. He had the farm Bellenchamp, which was situated in the Fransche Hoek (Drakenstein) area of the Cape. Gerrit's farm Bellenchamp was about 5km from the farm of his father in-law Pierre Jacobs. Pierre's farm was called De Goode Hoop. "Bellenchamp" is marked as number 66 and "De Goode Hoop" is marked as number 16 on the "Map showing position of farms granted to French & Dutch Settlers up to 1700" in the Fransche Hoek region. Gerrit van VUUREN was die stamvader van die van Vuuren/ Vuren familie. Gerrit het om en by 1687 na die Kaap gekom, en hy was omtrent 20 jaar oud op daardie staduim.

Die dorpie Vuren het tussen 850 en 950 ontstaan. "End 1673 verlieten de Franse troepen Zaltbommel, begin 1674 Tiel. Tienduizend guldens werden er gevorderd om vernielingen en plunderen af te kopen. Desondanks werden vele akkers vertrapt, boerderije leeg geroofd, dijken doorgestoken en kastelen verwoerst. Waarskynlik is toen ook het kasteel te Vuren, de Turnelenborch, verwoest.

In 1682. Een stormwind gepaard gaande met hoogwater, veroorzaakte in 1682 een nieuwe watersnood in de Tielerwaard.

Enkele bewoners hebben Vuren daarna verlaten om elders een nieuw bestaan op te bouwen. Zo zagen we reeds predikant Hamsche naar Overlangbroek vertrekken. We komen zelfs een emigrant uit Vuren tegen in de Kaapkolonie nl Gerrit Janszen (van Vuuren) een landbouer. Hij trad daar in het huwelijk met een gevluchte Hugenote en werd de stamvader van een grote, vooraanstaande Zuid Afrikaanse familie - de Janse van Vuuren's", Geneem uit die volgende boek Vuren, "een Arrem Land"? Elf eeuwen geschiedenis van een dorp aan de Waal. geskryf deur A Bijl.

In die boek, De Afkomst der Boeren van Dr HT Colenbrander uitgegeven door het Alg NL Verbond no 9 word die volgende aangedui: Na 1691 Gerrit Janz van Vuuren van die dorpie Vuren getroud in Nederland met Susanne Jacob van Frankrijk. Hulle het 2 kinderen. Sy nasionaliteit is Nederlands en haar nasionaliteit is.

Sy vrou was Suzanne JACOB, die dogter van Pierre Jacob en Suzanne de Vos. Hierdie familie het die dubbele van Janse of Jansen van Vuuren. Hy was Gerrit Janszoon, met ander woord die seun van Jan en hy was afkomstig van die dorp Vuren in Nederland. Hierdie familie het dus die verkynsel van beide die pleknaam en die vader se naam in hulle van. Die van Rensburg famlie het die selfe verskynsel in hulle familie.

• ***************************************************************************************************************************************************************** Gerritt was from Vuren on the banks of the Waal a short distance from Gorinchem. There is little left of the original Vuuren (which means fiery), but a more recent fort called Fort Vuren is there. It is surrounded by a complex of moats, and is now used as a B&B and restaurant. There are many old books and documents in the restaurant, many available for sale. I will try and post some pictures on this profile shortly. The few older buildings include a restaurant/bar called 'Oud Vuren' set into the side of the dyke. It carries a date of 1650, so should have been there when Gerritt was born. The date is said to be approximate. Again I will try to post some pictures, when I figure how to do it. One of the documents at the fort indicated that the Vuurens built the dykes there, but were not paid! The local history society seems active and has recently published a history of Vuuren in dutch. We got one in Gorinchem, but we have not really had time to look at it. It is the wrong language for me. Driving along the dyke is a pleasure, and pleasantly slow. The Waal carries many boats and the constant procession adds interest to the trip. Towards s'Hertenbosch there is a ferry across, which is frequent and cheap - a couple of Euros for the car and occupants. You get a good view of the river traffic. My wife took some pictures of old books at the fort and I will try to add some of those too. All in dutch of course.

c. Bezitgeschiedenis:

i. Karel de Stoute gaf het toen met de hoge en lage jurisdictie, land en tienden in leen aan Jan van Vuren. Het kasteel was buitendijks gelegen en werd in 1814 op een openbare veiling verkocht en vervolgens gesloopt. De heerlijkheid is dan bezit van de familie Sweerts de Landas

ii. De eerste adellijke heren van Vuren doken in de dertiende eeuw op in de Gelderse; Gerrit emigrated to the Cape in 1687. His reasons for the leaving the Netherlands are not known but on the website Water in Vuren it is mentioned that at the beginning of the 1680's the town experienced high levels of poverty. This is said to have been mainly due to a widespread "watersnoden" (flooding) and damage caused to the area by the French in 1672 during the Third Anglo -Dutch War (1672 to 1674). Perhaps Gerrit emigrated to the Cape to escape these circumstances.

iii. Gerrit arrived on the Southern tip of Africa in September 1687 on board of one of the following ships: "De Lek, Waterland, de Grote Visserie" or the " t'Rad van Aventure". About 50 persons on board the above ships requested Commandant Van Der Stel to stay on in the Cape as farmers. Most of the requests were denied and only 17 persons allowed to stay behind. On 16 October 1687 twenty-three farmers, Vryboere (free citizens not in the service of the Dutch Indian Company or VOC), including Gerrit, were allocated farms in the Bergriver Valley below the majestic Drakenstein mountains.

iv. Begin veertiende eeuw stierven zij uit en kwam de heerlijkheid Vuren in handen van een jongere tak van de Arkels, de heren van Asperen, die iets ten westen van de oude kerk aan de Waaldijk het kasteel de Tumelenburg bouwden. Door deze Arkelse binding zou Vuren ook betrokken raken bij de Arkelse Oorlog tussen Jan van Arkel en de graaf van Holland die tussen 1401 en 1412 in de streek rond Gorinchem woedde

g. He and his wife Suzanne called the farm Bellingchamp. The name is of French origin and undoubtedly was the choice of his wife Suzanne who was of French descent. The name possibly refers to a meadow in which animals like sheep graze with bells around their necks to warn about any dangers such as thief's. The farm is today known as Bellingham and is the estate that produces the famous Bellingham label of wines.

h. Prachtig gelegen tussen de bergen van Groot Drakenstein in de Franschhoek Vallei bevindt zich de Bellingham Winery. De eerste duizend wijnstokken werden hier in 1693 geplant, een eeuw na de eerste pogingen van VOC-gouverneur Jan van Riebeeck. Dit gebeurde door Hollander Gerrit Janse van Vuuren, samen met zijn Franse vrouw, een Hugenote.
