About Harry Tweedale Flynn
Harry was born in Rochdale 1916 and emigrated 1927 to Brisbane Australia with his parents and sister Joyce.
He studied art at college and was apprenticed for 5 years as a commercial artist and signwriter.
He served in the Army during WW2, with Service number QX9777
He served from June 1940 to September 1945, in the Middle East (Tobruk) and in Papua New Guinea.
HIs rank was as Private, then Corporal, then Sergeant.
His work during the war was as a driver for a Casualty Clearing Station (medical evacuations of soldiers).
He was given permission to sketch & paint during his service, and his role redefined when in Papua New Guinea, to be a draughtsman. He made many sketches of officers, the environment, vehicles, planes etc, many of which survive today and are held by his children. Harry met Virve and they moved to Sydney, living first in a flat in Woollahra, then buying a house in Mona Vale in September 1949, when daughter Penny was born.
In Sydney he worked for BCJP advertising company, and various newspapers. He worked as a freelance commercial artist from about 1970 and was still working on signs and advertising when his health began failing around the age of 75.
