Henry Glover, of New Haven

Henry Glover of the New Haven Colony was born say 1616 in England and died on September 2, 1689. His will, dated August 20, 1689, made bequests to Mercy Mansfield, Abigail Burr, Sarah Ball, and to the children of his deceased son John Glover, and to his wife 'Ellin Glover.'

"Helena Wakeman was born in 1607 at Ribbesford, Worcestershire, England, the daughter of Francis and Anne (Good) Wakeman. Francis Wakeman was born 6 Oct 1565 at Bewdley, Worcestershire, England, and died 2 September 1626 at Eastham, Worcestershire. Anne Good was born 27 Oct 1568 at Bewdley in Worcestershire. She died 29 January 1620/21 at Bewdley."

Excommunicated for Scandalous Evils

It seems that early on, Henry was at odds with the religious community. New Haven town records show that in 1644, he had been excommunicated for scandalous evils and he was asking to be readmitted to the church. There is no further description of what he had actually done to have this action taken against him. On the morning of August 11th, Henry had to stand outside the meetinghouse during church services, then after the congregation had left, he was allowed to come inside to plead his case to the elders. He admitted to breaking rules multiple times, but suggested he had been tempted by Satan, and that he wanted to rejoin the church. When the elders told him he would have to wait a week for a ruling, Henry got agitated, and he let some words fall which had the appearance of discontent." But he soon apologized, and one week later, he was absolved and set free from the sentence of excommunication, and his membership in the church was restored.

His will:

In his will, dated 20 August 1689 and proved on an unknown date, "Henry Glover of New Haven" bequeathed that "which remains undisposed of already by deeds of gift, which deeds I do hereby ratify and confirm," to "my beloved daughters Mercy Mansfield, Abigaile Burre & Sarah Ball all my outlands both in the second & third division, with such meadows as are not already disposed of by deed of gift ... to be equally divided between them"; to "my loving daughter-in-law Joanna Thompson (formerly Glover) as a token of my love one cow"; to "my three grandchildren, daughters of my late son John Glover deceased, to each of them a cow, as they attain the age of eighteen years"; to "my aforesaid two daughters Mercy Mansfield and Abigaile Burre fifteen acres of upland lying in New Haven Neck ... in two parcels, the one thirteen acres & a half ..., & the other one acre & half ... to be equally divided between them"; to "my aforesaid daughter Sarah Ball eight acres & half lying in New Haven Neck in two parcels, six acres in the quarter called Grigson's quarter, & two acres & half in the Suburbs quarter"; to "my aforesaid three daughters Mercy, Abigaile & Sarah," "all my right in one pasture or in the common"; residue to "my dear & beloved wife Ellin Glover, ... desiring her to consider the afflicted state of my daughter Mansfield, & also for the promoving [i.e., promoting] & encouraging of his education"; "my dear & beloved wife Ellin Glover" to be sole executrix, and after her death "my loving sons-in-law Moses Mansfield & Dan[ie]ll Burre" to be executors [NHPR 2:2:29].

The inventory of the estate of "Mr. Henry Glover deceased," taken 21 October 1689, totalled 285lb. 10s. 7d., of which 112lb. 12s. was real estate: "land & meadows," 96lb. 12s.; and "land," 16lb., along with "the right of two 600lb. lots in the ox pasture" [NHPR 2:2:30].

Generation 2

HANNAH GLOVER was born on 23 May 1646 at New Haven, New Haven County, Connecticut.

Very little has been located as documentation for Hannah. Only a small footnote about her appears in a Glover Family genealogy, as follows: Her name, Hannah Glover, the daughter of Helena Glover, is noted as a footnote on pg. 485 of An Account of John Glover of Dorchester and His Descendants, by Anna Glover (Boston: David Clapp & Son, 1867) p. 485. There may also be mention of her in Families of Ancient New Haven, by Donald Lines Jacobus (Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1981 [originally] Rome, N.Y. and New Haven, Conn., 1922-1932), Vol. 1, p. 107.

Hannah married on 24 Nov 1663, DAVID ASHLEY at New Haven. He was born, a twin, on 3 June 1642 at Springfield, Mass, the son of Robert & Mary Ashley.

"Anderson estimates, based on the birth dates of their children, that Henry and Helena were married about 1641, and that Henry was born about 1616. He believes that this Henry Glover of New Haven was not the Henery Glover, (Henry Glover), who enrolled at Ipswich as a passenger for New England on the Elizabeth in 1634 at the age of 24. Anderson believes that the "other" Henry would have been about 30-31 at the time of marriage, rather old at that time. Additionally, there is no evidence connecting the other Henry Glover to New Haven. Anderson concludes that there were three distinct Henry Glovers in New England in that time frame."
