Ben M. Angel notes: The Holy Roman Empire began on 2 September 962. Hildegarde was born in the 8th century. As such, she, as with any member of the Carolingian dynasty, was never a member of the ruling house of the Holy Roman Empire. Charlemagne was coroneted Emperor of the Romans, not Holy Roman Emperor, and his empire was a precursor to the HRE.
