I would speculate that he (or his family) found it expedient to flee to Virginia in anticipation of Charles' attempted coup.

James and his father were carpenters, building many of the houses in Brucetown, Virginia. James was also a surveyor. James received an appointment from the Governor as an Ensign in the militia during the Revolutionary War.

Albin Book, pg. 4: James and Margaret moved to the northern branch of the Potomac River in Alleghany Co. MD about 1763/4. From there they moved to western PA, near Elizabethown, and finally after the Revolutionary War to Nelson Co. KY. Inherited his father's carpenter tools.
