James Hamilton of Torrance, here treated, is first noticed by that name as a witness to a charter dated 5 August 1466. An Inventory of the Lamont Papers, 1231-1897, document number 46 on pp. 20-21 He is noticed for a second time on 6 April 1479. James Hamilton of Torrance, here treated, was still alive on 26 February 1486, when his son Robert Hamilton, identified as the son and apparent heir of James Hamilton of Torrance, witnessed a sasine made in favour of Gavin Maxwell son and apparent heir of Sir John Maxwell of Calderwood.Memoirs of the Maxwells of Pollock, i, document number 61 on pp. 198-99 His son Robert is noticed again on 3 January 1494 as: "Rob. Hammiltoun filio et apparente herede Jacobi H. de Torrens" when he witnessed a charter issued by Alexander Lindsay of Dunrod.
