About James Timothy

James Arthur Timothy, age 90, of Altonah, passed away peacefully surrounded by those who loved and cared for him June 5, 2011. He was out riding his golf cart just two weeks before his passing. He had a wonderful life and did not suffer long before being allowed to return home.

Arthur was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, Aug. 1, 1920 to James Brigham and Thora Johnson Timothy. His mother Thora was a school teacher who waited many wears for a family so when Arthur and his brother Glade were born they were raised with much love and discipline and both grew up to be exceptionally fine men. When Arthur was two years old, the family moved to Hiawatha where his dad worked for four years. They moved back to Altonah and he started school in the little red brick, four room school house there and graduated in the new Altamont High school.

Arthur spent a lot of time with his father in the mountains cutting timber, working on canals and building the dam up above Yellowstone drainage. Arthur became an expert teamster driving their horses named Molly and Jane. When Arthur was 19 he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC Camp) spraying trees and worked on the road from mirror lake to Evanston. He rose quickly to the position of clerk.

He enjoyed telling the story of being interviewed by Joseph Fielding Smith before serving a mission in the Omaha Nebraska North Central States Mission in Feb 1942. In March 1944 he returned home and found his Draft notice waiting in mail. He joined the Navy and served 20 months reaching the rank of Fireman 3rd Class.

He married LaWana Murray June 3, 1947. They had seven children and worked hard to build a beautiful home and one of the finest A Grade dairies in the upper country.

Arthur was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day saints and loved the gospel. Just six months after returning home from the navy he served as ward clerk. At 27 years old he was called as second counselor in the bishopric. Four years later he was called as bishop of the Altonah ward and served many years until the new church was built in Altamont and the new Altamont ward was formed.

Arthur drove School bus for over forty years and genuinely loved being with the kids. He enjoyed serving on the UBTA board of directors for many years helping to lay the foundation for much of the modern technology that we enjoy today.

Arthur was a gracious and happy man and loved life. He loved his family, neighbors and friends. He loved good hard work and being outside.

He will be missed by his children Dave (Vicky) Timothy, Toquerville; Sandra (John) Donatello, Herriman; Lou-ann (Randy) Merrell, Vernal; Lori-Jo (Ronald) Winterton, Roosevelt; and Ira Duane (Bonnie) Timothy, Hurricane; 16 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, LaWana Timothy, twin baby boys, grandson Luke Merrell, and brother, Glade Timothy.

Funeral services were held June 13 at the Altamont LDS Stake Center. Burial was in the Altonah Cemetery with military honors provided by the Altamont American Legion.
