Biography On December 14, 1779, John Gottlieb married Caroline Magdalena Fehder and they reared a family of two boys and eight girls. The eldest son was named Henry and became known as Henry Jr., while his uncle Henry was known as Henry Sr. The names of the children were; Ann Helen Elizabeth (b. 1781), Catherine (b. 1782, m. Nicholas Floyd), John Henry (Jr.) b. 1784, m. Dorothy (Dorrie) Berringer), Mary (b. 1786, m. John Fitch), Anna Barbery (b. 1790), John (b. 1795, married Margaret Smith), Elizabeth (b. 1797, m. Michael Publicover and Sophia b. 1798.
In 1781, John Gottlieb and his brother Henry moved to Chester. This move coincides with the time of the purchase of the Mackerel Fishery by Christoph Gottlieb at the Head of the North West Arm in Halifax. It is not clear what happened to Christoph and his wife following the fire at the Fishery since there does not appear to be an available record of the time and place of their demise.
In Chester, Gottlieb and Henry apparently worked together as a team, with Gottlieb as the farmer and Henry the mariner and ships master.
Between 1781 and 1820, John Gottlieb acquired a substantial amount of property in and around Chester partially listed below:
On March 20, 1782, he and Adam Fedher, his brother-in-law, purchased approximately 50 acres of land at Lobster Point from Caspar & Mary Wollenhaupt. In 1798, John Gottlieb and his brother John Henry were each given a land grant of 450 acres and 400 acres respectively at Ecum Secum, Guysborough County, but it appears that they did not live there. On September 15, 1800 , John Gottlieb and Adam Floyd (the brother of his son-in-law, Nicholas Floyd) purchased 160 ares at Prescott Point from Samuel T. Prescott. This became the Gottlieb's homestead, which is now adjacent to the Chester Gold Club at Lobster Point. His original homes are presently owned and were restored by the estate of the late Mrs. J.N. Pew, the widow of one of the founders of Standard Oil of New Jersey, USA.
Gottlieb lived in the white house and he built the red one for his granddaughter Ann and her husband Andrew Zink. In recent years, Mrs. Pew sold part of the homestead to the Chester Golf Club in order for the Club to expand to an 18 hole course. During the summer of 1994, the owners of the Pew Estate decided to sell the homestead at an asking price of four million dollars.
In 1816, Gottlieb and his two sons, John Henry Jr. and John, purchased a Grant of 900 acres of land at Gold River. The Grant had been held by Gottlieb's brother-in-law, Christian Tanner.
On May 16, 1820 Gottlieb purchased a large working farm in the settlement of Sherbrooke, Guysborough County, the former grant of Captain William Skerry.
Both Gottlieb and his brother Henry were active in the St. Stephen's Anglican Church in Chester, and when Gottlieb died in 1831, he was buried in St. Stephen's Cemetery. Source: John E.
