About John Burroughs, of Trenton NJ

Possibly mistaken for Ens. John Burroughs, III

John BURROUGHS (Jeremiah2, John1) was born in Newtown, Queens Co, NY. He married (first) Mary JENNINGS. He married (second) Elizabeth. He died shortly before 8 Mar 1774 in Trenton (now Ewing) Tp, Hunterdon (now Mercer) Co, NJ.23,24 He was buried in Presbyterian Cemetery, Ewing Tp, Mercer Co, NJ.

John BURROUGHS likely had two wives. A history of the ABBOTT family states that Benjamin ABBOTT married Hannah BURROUGHS, daughter of John and Mary (JENNINGS) BURROUGHS. A number of sources list an Elizabeth as the mother of some of John's children. It is interesting to note that Joseph, Isaac, Jemima and James all named their oldest daughter Elizabeth, and Benjamin named his second oldest daughter Elizabeth. Also, Jemima (BURROUGHS) HOWELL named her twin daughters Elizabeth and Mary ... maybe after their two grandmothers. And John Jr. named one of his daughters Elizabeth, but none Mary.

Some sources have a son Henry. This comes from the "The History of Bucks County, Pennsylvania" by William DAVIS. He claimed that the father of the John BURROUGHS who married Lydia BAKER was Henry, and that Henry was the son of the John who died in Ewing Tp. However, the John who married Lydia BAKER in 1746 was born about 1718 according to his will. There is no way he can be the grandson of John of Ewing Tp.

Some sources have a son Cornelius. John's son Benjamin of Salem Co had a son Cornelius. Benjamin's birth date has been erroneously passed down as 1742, by subtracting 21 from his second marriage in 1763. The way-too-late birth date for Benjamin made it impossible for him to be the father of Cornelius, so people just threw Cornelius in as a son of John instead of as a grandson.

Daughter Sarah could be by Mary JENNINGS instead of Elizabeth.

John BURROUGHS reportedly came to Ewing Tp as an unmarried man about the age of 21. He purchased a farm not too far from the church.

John BURROUGHS signed an agreement involving Ewing Tp supposedly dated 26 Aug 1703. This however, does not fit well with the fact that he was still being schooled in 1698. Maybe 1703 should be 1708 or 1713.24,25

Some sources place this John BURROUGHS as John3 (John2, John1). However, that John was too young to be the John who moved to Hunterdon Co by 1703.

In a court record dated 26 Dec 1707 about a road from Maidenhead through Hopewell, land of John BURROUGHS was mentioned.

John BURROUGHS's name was on the 9 Mar 1709 deed for the "Trenton First Church", now Ewing.

John BURROUGHS was among the first grand jurors in 1714 in Hunterdon Co, NJ.

Trenton Tp was formed in 1719 from part of Hopewell Tp.

John BURROUGHS was Surveyor for the Highways in 1721 in Trenton Tp, Hunterdon Co, NJ.

John BURROUGHS was a Judge on 6 May 1721 in Hunterdon Co, NJ.

John BURROUGHS did not appear in the 1722 tax lists for Hunterdon County. Maybe it was a list of jurors and he was exempt for being a judge.

Some sources have this John BURROUGHS marrying Phebe HAINES in 1726. That marriage record, however, says John BURROUGH (no S), son of Samuel.

John BURROUGHS was listed in 1738 as a freeholder in Trenton Tp, Hunterdon Co, NJ.

On 10 Mar 1737/38, John BURROUGHS of Tren Town, County of Hunterdon, West New Jersey, to John REEDER of Newtown, "all controversies, actions or ???? by reason of the piece of parcel of land formerly conveyed to me by John Reeder decd father of the said John Reeder of Newtown". This is more evidence that John of Trenton Tp was the son of Jeremiah.

On 27 Aug 1740, John BURROUGHS of Trenton Hunterdon Co NJ yeoman and Elizabeth ABBIT of Queens Co widow and relict of Joseph ABBIT late of Oyster Bay posted a bond unto John BURROUGHS of Newtown for the administration of Joseph ABBIT's estate. Elizabeth must have been a relative, probably a sister of either John of Newtown or John of Trenton. See also the 19 May 1741 bond of John of Upper Makefield Tp.

John BURROUGHS was listed in 1741 as a freeholder in Trenton Tp, Hunterdon Co, NJ.

In 1743, an earmark was granted to William BURROUGHS of Hopewell Tp. In 1744, William BURROUGHS of Trenton Tp sold land. Is this another son of Jo

hn of Trenton Tp? Is he William4 (James3, Jeremiah2, John1)? Or is he some unknown William?

John and Joseph BURROUGHS were witnesses when Mary BURROUGHS, widow of Philip, renounced her right to administer her husband's estate to Philip's father John.

John BURROUGHS was granted administration of the estate of Jeremiah BURROUGHS on 10 Nov 1746 in Hunterdon Co, NJ, (John was a yeoman from Trenton Tp).

The will of Benjamin ABBOTT of Makefield Tp, Bucks Co, PA, dated 23 Dec 1746, mentioned his father-in-law John BURROUGHS of Trenton.

A 1753 will in Newtown mentioned John and Joseph, sons of John BURROUGHS of West Jersey.

John BURROUGHS was Overseer of Roads in 1755 in Trenton Tp, Hunterdon Co, NJ.

John BURROUGHS of Trenton Tp, Hunterdon Co, NJ, left a will dated 22 Oct 1768 (the will mentioned grandson Jonathan BURROUGHS, daughters Sarah MOORE, Elizabeth ROSE, Mary BAKER, Jemima HOWELL, sons Benjamin and Isaac of Salem Co, son James the family plantation, executors sons Joseph and James, witnesses Silas ROSE, Daniel LANING, Abigail HOWELL). An inventory of the estate of John BURROUGHS was taken on 8 Mar 1774 in Hunterdon Co, NJ. The will was proved on 9 Mar 1774 in Hunterdon Co, NJ.

Jonathan JENNINGS was the first governor of Indiana and was born in Hunterdon Co.

JOHN BURROUGHS

"Genealogy of Early Settlers in Trenton and Ewing 'Old Hunterdon County,' New Jersey," by EF & WS Cooley, Baltimore: General Publishing Co., 1977 also lists Cornelius and Henry as children.

John migrated from Long Island, New York to Ewing Twp., Hunterdon (now Mercer) Co., New Jersey about 1705, along with many of the other pioneer families.

His will was signed 1772.

It is assumed, but not confirmed, that John was buried in First Presbyterian Church of Ewing Cemetery. He was a founder of the church, being listed along with 16 others in 1709 as receiving the deed transfer, and lived nearby for the rest of his life.
