Origins

Something to consider--the following statement by James Garrett on 14 Feb 2008:

"John Garrett of New Kent VA md to Elizabeth Ware is NOT s/o John & Mary of Leicestershire, England! This info has been circulated throughout websites & forums without proof. John Garrett of New Kent VA is reported to have come from Ireland as well as the Ware family.

"John Garrett of England & wife Mary did indeed have a son John b. 10 Jan 1631. But this John stayed in England & had 2 children born 1662 & 1666, John & Mary respectively
, in Leicestershire, England whose birth are registered.

"As I understand only William, s/o John (by the late Ann Dunston) & Mary, went to America & settled in PA.[1]

Adding to the above controversy, a couple of different Garretts claiming ancestors from Leicestershire are not matching according to the yDNA project.

According to this site, this was John Garrett III:

GENERATION THREE

JOHN GARRETT III (1630-AFT 1665) m. ELIZABETH WARE (c1638 Kent, England-AFT 1664 New Kent Co., VA)

Elizabeth Ware was the d/o Peter Ware III and Mary Farmer (d/o William Farmer) and Elizabeth Hicks and settled in New Kent Co., VA. Her brother, Nicholas Ware I, married Jenny Garrett, sister of John Garrett, III. In 1655 John Garrett III and John Hudson jointly received a land grant of 386 acres in New Kent Co. Ten years later in 1665, John Garrett and Nicholas Ware jointly patented 386 acres in New Kent Co, VA where they settled and raised their families.

Thirty years earlier, on 3 Jun 1635, Rev. George White, Robert Newman and Richard Bennett, and others, patented hundreds of acres along the Nansemond River. Bennett's commercial and political connections included William Claiborne. The land purchased in New Kent Co. by John Garrett and Nicholas Ware was adjacent to William Claiborne. When William Claiborne died in 1673, he left two Quaker Friends as his executors. William Claiborne of Virginia: With Some Account of His Pedigree, by John Herbert Claiborne, p. 205.

In Nell Marion Nugent's Cavaliers and pioneer, Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and Grants, 1632-1666, John Garrett and Nicholas Ware’s 386 acres was located on the northside of the Mattaponi River for transporting. 8 persons: Sarah Dibdall [wife of Rev. John Dibdall of Surry Co., VA] Jim White [probably related to Rev. George White of Surry Co., VA], Rowland Lurs, William Bryan, La. Boucher, Fran Cooke, Agnes Buck [probably related to Isaac Buck of Scituate who purchased a house once belonging to Resolved White, brother-in-law of Nicholas Ware]. In 1642, Elizabeth Garrett was the sponsor of Stephen Gill o York River. Stephen Gill lived adjacent to Peter Ware III on Queen’s Creek in York Co., VA.

GENERATION THREE

John Garrett III (1630->1665) m. Elizabeth Ware (c1638 co. Kent, England-Aft 1664 New Kent Co., VA), d/o Peter Ware III and Mary Hicks and settled in New Kent Co., VA.

Lord John GARRETT, I was 12 years old when the first English immigrants landed at Jamestown; was 25 years old when the Mayflower landed; was 29 years old before Galileo told the Pope that the earth revolved around the sun rather than the other way around.

He, and 7 of his children immigrated to Pennsylvania between 1650 and 1680. It appears that he immigrated before his children did in 1684. Records of Early Philadelphia Residence list all of John’s children (except John II) as well as himself. They were heavily involved in the Quaker movement He died in America on August 31, 1680 in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

His oldest child was John Garrett, II was born on February 2, 1635 in Leicestershire, England, which is north of London. The records show that he was knighted on February 26, 1615; however if that is true, he was only 20 years old

In Leicestershire, the Garretts and the Wares were friends and/or neighbors. The Wares were from Ireland and there is some evidence that John Garrett, II lived for a while in Ireland before returning with the Wares to England. John Garrett married Elizabeth Ware shortly before, or after, immigrating to Virginia in about 1664.

Before marring Elizabeth he married Nannie Harrison and had a son named William Garrett who was born on February 12, 1661. Perhaps, Nannie died and baby son William came to Virginia with his father, John and step mother Elizabeth Ware in 1664. Elizabeth’s brother, Nicholas Ware and John Garrett II jointly patented land in New Kent County, VA on the north side of the Mattapony River on the head branches of the Hartequack Swamp on August 21, 1665

John GARRETT II was born January 10, 1631 in Hosse, Leicestershire, England. He was about 32 years old when he immigrated to Virginia (probably to claim the land that his father had obtained when he was there with John Dunston about 30 years earlier).

He married Nannie Harrison in about 1660 when he was about 29 years old. She was born 1635 in England and died 1663 in England. They had two children (I believe):

  • i. William GARRETT was born February 12, 1661 in Derby, Leicestershire, England.
  • ii. Mary Garrett was born 1662.

He married 2nd (2) Elizabeth Ware in 1664, probably in England. She was born February 13, 1635 in Dublin, Ireland.

Most records show that Mary and William’s mother was Elizabeth Ware, however, they were born before Elizabeth Ware married John and shortly before Nannie Harrison died. Probably Nannie’s death resulted from Mary’s birth.

John GARRETT, II was acquainted with the Ware’s while he lived in England. Elizabeth Ware’s father, Peter Ware and at least a part of his family probably immigrated first in the Plymouth Colony, but due to religious disagreement moved by 1646 to the Hampton Parish in Virginia. We find Peter Ware in Ireland in 1636 selling his property before coming to America by way of England. Some records have all of Peter Ware’s children immigrating with him in 1646 -- if so Elizabeth Ware would have been 12 years old. Other records report that Elizabeth Ware “wanted to join her father and brother in Virginia” thus suggesting that she did not immigrate in 1646 but stayed in England until she came over with John GARRETT II in 1664.

Peter Ware’s ancestors were named De La Warre and according the Ware Family History, Lord De La Warre commanded the supply ships that saved the Jamestown Colony in 1610 and the state of Delaware is named after him. It is also reported that John GARRETT, II came to America with his father and half-brothers Thomas and William (the Quaker) -- but Lord John GARRETT, I and Mary Bible’s children (including Thomas and William (the Quaker) immigrated to Philadelphia, PA. So, we don’t know if one of the two groups split off while immigrating.

Children of John GARRETT II and (2) Elizabeth Ware:

  • i. Thomas Garrett was born 1674 in New Kent Co., VA and died April 2, 1734 in Cowan Co., NC.
  • ii. John Ware Garrett III was born 1675 in New Kent, VA and died 1728 in Stafford, New Kent Co., VA.
  • iii. Nicholas Ware Garrett was born 1676 probably in VA.
  • He apparently never married. He may have died young.
  • iv. Elizabeth Garrett was born 1678 in King and Queen Co., VA and died in about 1750 in King & Queen Co., VA.
  • v. Robert Garrett was born 1680 in New Kent Co., VA and died 1743 in King & Queen Co., VA.

John GARRETT II and his brother Nicholas Ware Sr., patented land in New Kent County on the north side of the Mattapony River on the head branches of Hartequack Swamp on 8/21/1665. The area was later made part of King and Queen County, VA.

The year (1664) that John and Elizabeth were married, Archbishop James Usher of the Church of Ireland, made a careful study of the Bible and other historical sources and concluded that the Earth had been created at midday on October 23, 4004 B.C
