• 1889-1890 Left for the Northern Transvaal at Rhodes request to investigate the Loui Ardendorf trek (Zoutspanberg district) mission of inspection (intelligence)
• June 1890 cut road for the Column to the border, eight miles up-stream of the Tuli & Shashi confluence. 10/7/1890 despatch rider to Pietersburg.
• 1891 Met Jameson early 1891. Came north with Willie & Harry Posselt. One of the first pioneer-prospectors at the Angwa river, Rhodesia. Pegged Ayrshire mine north of Banket.
• 1893/4 At Allan Wilsons request he raised the Victoria Scouts which he led through the Matabele war, for this he received the silver Queen Victoria Medal for operations in Matabeleland. Owned a farm near Ayres Poort on the old lomagundi Rd. which he gave to C. J. van Staden for considerations shown in the past. Also owned a block of farms CARRUTHERS VALE"in the Marandellas district.
