About Jonas Svanström
Jonas Svanström (1794-1881), a tailor at Landsberg in Broddebo.
His godparents were Lars Gardström, Karl Håkansson, Salomon Månsson of Svenserum, hustru Cajsa Larsdotter, Sarah Josephsdotter, and Cajsa Månsdotter of Torstorp.
In 1815 he was a farmhand (dräng) at Hammarn in Gärdserum. From 1815 to 1819 he lived in the household of the tailor Magnus Nilsson, with whom he was apparently apprenticed. His 1822 marriage record calls him a tailor's apprentice (skräddardräng) in Broddebo.
He lived at Landsberg in Broddebo, Gärdserum, and stayed there until his death in 1881.
(Villagers in Broddebo needed a tailor and therefore built the tailor's place Landsberg. In the only room at times lived two families. Skräddarstället Landsberg is listed in the parish catechetical meeting 1814-23 and is home tailor's family Svanström. To the cottage in 1870 came a new tenant, the tailor Claes Magnus Lindholm family. The families shared the only room that was in the cottage and the cooking was done in batches for each family. At that time there was no closet on the second floor. It was built later by Johan Georgsson.)
Village tailors in the 18th century had a very hard life. The day would start at 6 o'clock in the morning, then sit and sew all day as long as they could see. In winter, the work was done with the help of some light from candle dishes or small kerosene lamps. For a full suit of clothes the tailor got three kronor (about 36 cents) and for the blue trousers worn by farm boys 25 öre (about 3 cents). If the tailor was very industrious he could make two suits in a week.
