• He was a yeoman; had a 15 acre land grant in Braveboat Harbor in 1694; bought 50 acres of upland and 5 acres of salt marsh in 1701 there lying adjacent to land formerly granted to John Andrews, Sr.; could not write his name.
- He was a founder of the first Congregational Church at Kittery in 1714.
- In Aug. 1722 it was ordered that several houses "be made Defencible at Kittery" and it was commanded "that Joseph Mitchell's house be fortified, And that ye Inhabitants & familys from Joseph Billings to John Whitney Inclusively Lodge therein."
