About Margaret Chamness

In 1744, William and Margaret Williams, with their two small children, Priscilla & Isaac moved to Fairfax, Loudon County, VA. Here eight more children were born.

In 1762, they moved further south to Cane Creek, N.C., a Friends community of Chatham county. Their youngest son, William Jr. was born there in 1763.

Soon after, their oldest daughter, Priscilla married John Pike, the son of John and Abigail (Overman) Pike. The Pike and Williams families had moved from Virginia to Cane Creek about the same time. Son Isaac married John Pike's sister Rachel in 1765, and in '69, their daughter Elizabeth married Nathan Pike.

The year 1766 was a rough one. Three of the children Jean, Mary, and Richard died of some unknown cause; probably a frontier epidemic.

In 1770, Owen married Katherine, daughter of James Crawford. In 1772, Margaret married Alexander, son of Charles and Eleanor Campbell.

The following year William Sr. became ill and died soon after, Sept. 11, 1773. A neighbor, Anthony Chamness, had lost his wife in the same year.

So, on May 9, 1776, Margaret Williams was married to the widower Anthony Chamness. But he died shortly after ----20, 1777, and Margaret was widowed the second time.
