More Notes

Marie was the young mother of three when in 1617 she left her home in Paris to accompany her husband, Louis Hebert, in his ambitious career as an apothecary and farmer in the New World. There, she became known for her tirelessness and generousity towards her fellow settlers. Her family also enjoyed unusually good relations with the local natives to whom Louis was a physician and she a teacher. Following her husband's death, she resolved to remain in New France with her family. In 1632, when Quebec, Canada was returned to the French after a three year occupation by the English, the Jesuits described hers as the only French family settled in Canada. from the web site http://nlc bnc.Canada/heroes/erollet.htm, "Heroes of Lore and Yore."

https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=113832229 Marie is the daughter of Jean Rollet and Anne Cogu. She was born about 1577, in Paris, France. She married Louis Hebert in 1602, also in Paris.

Marie, Louis, their children, and Marie's brother, Claude Rollet, left Paris on 11 April 1617, on the St. Etienne, arriving in Quebec on 15 July 1617.

Marie was a true pioneer! She was the first European woman to live in New France. She was also the first school teacher in Canada – teaching her own children and the young Native Americans how to read and write, and instructing them in the Christian faith.

She helped her husband farm their land, and she treated the sick. Her home became a meeting place for colonists and natives alike.

Louis died in 1627, but Marie continued to live in the colony. She married her second husband, Guillaume Hubou, the son of Jean Hubou and Jeanne Goupil, on 16 May 1629, in Quebec City. He was born in Saint-Andre, Le Mesnil-Durand, Lisieux, Normandy, France.

Marie was almost 50, so they had no children. Also in 1627, the British forced Quebec's surrender. All of the colonists were given the choice to return to France, but Marie chose to stay in her home (only a handful of families stayed). They were able to continue to work their land. The French rule was restored in 1632.

After the British left, Marie housed orphans and young native girls being taught by the Jesuits. She became the godmother of many converted natives, which suggests her continued friendship with the Native Americans.

Marie was 69 when she died, after spending over 30 years in New France, and outliving her first husband and two of her children.
