Matthias (Mathias) was born about 1742 in Orange County, Virginia, in what is now known as Madison County. Matthias married Eva Klug (about 1765), the daughter of Rev Samuel King in Virginia, and were parents to nine children.

One of Matthias' daughters married James Broyles, father of Simeon. A daughter, Grace, married Joseph Mauchinhauk in Washington, Tenn in 1807, and moved to Indiana. Joseph's brother Samuel, married Mary (Polly) Broyles, daughter of James, father of Simeon.

Like many of his brothers, Matthias owned land in Kentucky. In Tennessee, Matthias sold 524 acres (1797) of land to Thomas Williamson on the south side of Nolachucky River. Two years later sold 75 acres lying on Horse Creek.

Matthias died in Davidson County (As of 1803, this was known as Rutherford County), Tennessee by a lightning strike. He was on his way home from Indiana from visiting one of his children. _________________________________________________________
