The name of this family both in this country and in England is variously spelled: Hardy, Hardie, Hardee. It is affirmed that this numerous family with different spellings are descended from the Norman Knight DeHardy. The family were Vikings who came into the area of Scotland belonging to the McTavish clan. They went into Ireland where a county is still named Hardy. From there they went into England. The earliest Hardy for whom there is an authentic record in America was: John Hardy b. 1613 d.1670 who came from England to Virginia before 1666 to Isle of Wight Co. He married Olive Council in 1632. She died after 1670. From them descended all of the persons embraced in this genealogy. Mrs. Mary Susan Hardy Wood

Capt. John Hardy, born in England about 1637, came before 1654 to Virginia with his brother George Hardy. He was a member of the House of Burgesses in 1668, and a Justice of the County Court about 1675. In 1666, at age 56, John Hardy Sr. received his first land grant. As we all know land grants or "patents" were many times delayed for years, so he probably had been in the Colonies for well over 20 years at the time. He was granted 1150 acres for importing 23 persons including himself, his 1st wife Olive Council, six of his children (George, Thomas, Richard, Isabel, John Jr., and Ann) as well as his future son-in-law William Mayo all of whom were born in England and he had never received a grant of land for their importation. Isabella HARDY is the 27th gen. desc. of Alfred 'The Great', 27th gen. desc. of Charlemagne.

The first three children (those born before 1712) may be of a marriage to Josie Willis, reported in LDS records. Josie Willis apparently died before 1712; or it may be visa versa, with Josie Willis being his second wife and married before 1712.

I've added a new "hot key" to my Welcome Page. It is the ancestry of my husband and is called "Dennis Lundahl's Genealogy Site." His ancestry includes people from Sweden (Skåna & Väster Götland (was Skaraborg) counties), Switzerland (Solothurn canton), & New York State Palatine & Dutch settlers. "Last Edited Date" is now a data element in each record. My ancestry is from New England, Virginia, England, Scotland, Germany, & Switzerland (as of 4 April 2020). My current concentration is on combining the database of a dear friend who recently passed away with my database. Her ancestry is heavily into New England, with additional ancestry from Scotland & Switzerland. I've also taken time to fill in my Hoover and Brooks ancestry. Biography Olive Council was born on June 2, 1615, in England. She married John HARDY in 1632 in England and they came to Virginia by 1666.

John Hardy patented land in 1666 naming himself and wife Olive (Council) as headrights in Isle of Wight, Virginia, Lawns Creek Plantation.[1]

They had more than four children in 27 years.

She died on June 2, 1675, in Isle of Wight, Virginia, at the age of 60, and was buried in Smithfield, Virginia.

Some Children of Olive Council and John Hardy:

George Hardy 1633–1695 married Mary Jackson 1640-1693 (grandaughter of Alice Bennet 1595-1677 Isle of Wight) Richard 1640-1734 married Mary Vincent Lucy Hardy 1641–1699 married Hodges Council Sr 1643-1699; Olive Hardy 1644–1703 married Giles Driver 1635-1677; 2nd John Pitt 1634-1702; Deborah Hardy 1660– married John Portis Jr. -1704. Note: John Johnson (1663-1707 Isle of Wight) is the son of Katherine Allen (1643-1693) and Robert Johnson (1643-1733 Isle of Wight). Katherine Allen is the daughter of Arthur Allen (1602-1670 Bacons Castle, Surry County, Virginia, USA) and Alice Tucker born about 1606 and died after about 1686. Alice Tucker was still living in 1686 on the 1666 patent land set aside for her in the 1676 Will of John Hardy when she is named as a neighbor to a new patent on the west side. Alice Tucker (Mrs Arthur Allen) married John Hardy. Robert Burnett married Alice Tucker's daughter, Joan Allen. William Mayo married Alice Tucker's daughter, Isabel Allen, or another Isabel.
