About Peter Zickafoose

Family name spelling variations: Zicafoose, Zickafoose, Zigafoose

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wvpendle/Zicafoose.htm

If Peter Zickafoose is the son of Johan Jacob Ziegenfus he could well have been born in Germany if his birth date is as early as 1750 or if this birth date is after 1751 he was probably born in the Philadelphia, PA area. Most accounts mark Peter as being born circa 1754-1755.

His last land purchase, found to this date, is 1805 in Pendleton Co., VA and his estate is being probated in Nov. 1814. This would place his death circa 1808-1812 allowing at least two years for the estate to settle. He is noted as dying intestate showing his death in Pendleton Co.

Peter married Catherine (Catharine) Margaret Hull (born: circa 1780, probably Lancaster Co., PA - died: after 1814, probably Pendleton Co., VA), the daughter of Peter Thomas Hull (born: c. 1706, Pfalz, Germany - died: Feb 1776, Crab Bottom, Pendleton Co., VA) and Susannah Margaritha Dieffenbaugh (born: 31 Oct 1725, Pfalz, Germany - died: 31 Jan 1790, probably Pendleton Co., VA, married: 25 Nov 1750, Lancaster Co., PA).

The children of Peter Zickafoose and Catherine Hull are:

Susanna (Susan) Zickafoose, born 1775, Pendleton Co., VA - died: 1835, Pendleton Co., VA - married: Reuben Rudulph Buzzard in 1797, Pendleton Co.,

Mary Susannah Zickafoose, born; 1786, Pendleton Co., VA - died: 1850, Highland Co., VA - married; Henry Jones Fleisher on 1803, Highland Co., VA

Their children: John, born 1805 Warren Co., OH; Joseph, born 1811 Pendleton Co., VA; Peter born, 18 Mar 1808 Gilmer Co., WV;

Family Gedcom and notes show the oldest yet found child as being born in 1805 in Warren Co., Ohio but the later children as being born in WV. Most likely John Fleisher was born in WV then removed either with family or as an adult to Ohio.

Henry Jones Fleisher was born 1777, Pendleton Co., VA and died 1852. Records only show his death as in Virginia.

George Zickafoose, born: 1780, Pendleton Co., VA - died: 1872 - married: Catherine Lance.

George Zickafoose is noted as being an elder son who owned land in the Augusta County Court Record of 1814, concerning Peter Zickafoose's estate.

Elias is noted as being an elder son to Peter Zickafoose and as owning land in the Pendleton County, WV area at the time of his father's estate. See notes with Peter Zickafoose and the Augusta County Court Records. Elias is also noted as having died soon after Peter Zickafoose. With Peter's death circa 1808 and 1810 and the estate being finalized in the 1814 Augusta County Records, this would place Elias' death after 1810 but before Nov. 1814. Elias was still living during the Pendleton Census 0f 1810.

•Name: Peter Zickafoose •Sex: M •Birth: Abt 1756 in Bautzen, Sochen, Germany •Death: Nov 1814 in Augusta County, Virginia •Note: Known as Peter The Pioneer The following information comes from the History Center at http://www.crosswinds.net/~mapletree/History_Center.htm "Many of the Zickafoose family came from the Palatinate Kingdom of Germany due to religious persecution. The name Palatinate was originally given to the Imperial castles of the German Empire. They were strategically located to maintain order and to administer justice. Later, the title was retained by only two of the territorial magnates of the Empire, whose states were distinguished as the Upper and Lower Palatinate. As a result of the suffering of the people through several wars, many came to the American colonies. They were encouraged to settle in the western part of the colony of Virginia (now West Virginia ). West Virginia became a state on June 20, 1863, and some county lines changed over a period of several years, thus the reason many were born in Virginia and died in West Virginia. "Ziegenfuss, Johann Jacob (1729-1780) Born January 9, 1729 in Germany, the son of Wilhelm and Anna Ziegenfuss He arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania September 16, 1751 on the ship Brothers. He first settled in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and later moved to Augusta County, Virginia. Some sources feel he was the father of Jacob Ziegenfuss who served with the Northampton County Militia in the Revolutionary War and Peter Ziegenfuss who settled in Pendleton County, Virginia. Records of Augusta County, Virginia reports in Vol. 1 Pg. 217, September 19, 1780 that the administration of the estate of Jacob Sigerfoos granted to William Rusk, Christiana, the widow, having refused to administer. "Ziegenfuss, Peter Early records indicate that Peter Zigenfuss, settled in Pennsylvania and later moved into Virginia. According to Highland County, Virginia history he owned over 800 acres of land. He married Catherine Hull, the daughter of Peter Thomas Hohl. They were the parents of seven children: Susanna (m. Ruben Buzzard), George (m. Catherine Lance), Fanny (m. Western Mills), Sampson (m. Sara Wade), Sally (m. John Samples), Elias (m. Sara Armentrout), Nancy (m. Henry Fleisher). From History of Highland County Virginia by Oren F. Morton: p.387 - Peter died 1814, married Catharine, and seems to have had a younger brother, Elias, who died in 1814 and was married to Sarah Elkins. p. 87 - Peter lived in Crabbottom, in the same area as Peter Hull and Michael Arbogast, and was there by 1772. p. 111 - By 1800, Peter had 570 acres in what was then Pendelton County and is now Highland, and was one of the major landholders. According to the Highland Co. Virginia VaGen Web Page at rootsweb.com, Peter is classified as one of the pioneer settlers of the county, but the family name is now extinct in that county, according to Morton's History of Highland County. According the same web site, the information below comes from the Surveyor's Office of Augusta Co. and the Land Office of Va.: In 1772, 250 acres in Crabbottom, from the corner to Arbogast's, were surveyed for Peter Zickafoose, and then he received a patent in 1789. (Patent means he was the first owner of the property, and received it from the government. When the term patent is used, it usually means he received it from the Crown. Other governments usually use the term "grant." So this shows he was the original settler.) In 1781, 218 acres were surveyed on the Bullpasture (a river), adjacent to Robert Carlisle. In 1782, 106 acres were surveyed adjacent to himself. In 1785, 112 acres were surveyed in Crabbottom and he received a patent in 1789. In 1786, 40 more acres surveyed adjacent to himself. In 1786, 78 acres near Doe Hill and 82 acres on Crab Run near Beathe were surveyed. In 1789, 250 acres on Crabbottom were surveyed and patent was received.
