A son , Col. Benjamin Hawkins, born 8-15-1754, and died in the Creek Nation June 6, 1816 in the function of Supt. of Ind. Affairs. His bro. Col Philemon Hawkins recorded this in his bible. Says he was in public life 36 years. Served in the Congress and app. by congress to Commissioner to treat with the Cherokee Indians. Did his duty then returned to Congress.

“THE HAWKINS FAMILY The first of this distinguished family to settle in America was Philemon Hawkins who was a descendant of the celebrated admiral Sir John Hawkins whose deeds redounded to England's glory through his son Sir Richard Hawkins Philemon was born in England in 1690 and his wife Ann Howard was born in 1695 He came to this country in 1715 and made his home in Gloucester county Va where he died in 1725. Mrs Hawkins survived him seventeen years and died at the residence of her son Philemon in Bute now Warren county NC. ...”
