About Pvt. Samuel Salter, Virginia Line, Continental Army
Samuel Salter was the son of Samuel Salter and wife Mary Pendergast,. He was born in 1753 in Baltimore, Maryland and died August 15, 1838 in Scioto County, Ohio. He married Bridget Shea c.1781. She is believed to have been born c.1750 in County Cork, Ireland. There were five known children - Nancy, William, Samuel, Alexander and Eli. He was a tavern keeper by profession.
Samuel Salter served in the American Revolution from 1776 to May 1777, as a private in the 12th Regiment, Virginia Line, Continental Army, under Colonel Ebenezer Zane. He was honorably discharged in Winchester, Virginia. The Daughters of the American Revolution recognizes his service and has awarded him DAR Ancestor #: A203543.
Samuel's pension file exists today, showing that, at the time of his pension application in 1822, he was living with wife Bridget in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.By January, 1833, he had moved to Scioto County, Ohio and was living with his children.
He was able to write and signed his name (when requesting his pension) crossing both the "l" and "t" making it look like "Satter." In the request, he says he was a private in the company commanded by Captain Ebenezer Zane in the regiment commanded by Colonel Joseph Wood. The pension was granted on May 7, 1823, in the amount of $96 per year.
Samuel was buried in the Crawford Cemetery in Vernon Township, Scioto County, Ohio. "Crawford Cemetery is located on Wagner property, just south of the old Clinton Furnace. There are no visible signs of a cemetery, but with Mrs. Wagner's help the cemetery was located on the steep hill behind the Wagner's house. (Two miles from Mt. Hope Church, on Clinton Furnace Rd. in briars and underbrush. It was reputedly a sizable cemetery at one time, but only three stones could be dug up. These inscriptions were recorded Nov. 1, 1980 by Marguerite and Virgil Ramsey."
